i figured with such a short run with planet waves it wouldn't be an issue plus i have done it before and it worked fine. Anyway if i can't get it to work i guess i will have to cut holes and run an HDMI cable.

ARE you using the crimpless Planet Waves connector, as Lowhz guessed? You figure with such a short run it won't be an issue. When he says to get rid of the Planet Waves, he means that's not the correct kind of cable. But instead of saying you're going to use the correct kind of cable, you guess you'll have to cut holes.

Please help yourself here. Read these responses carefully and try out the things that are suggested.

Notice also that I suggested you needed to tell us MORE DETAIL about what you have, and as soon as you mentioned the cables, a person here with experience was able to set you straight. ALWAYS include details!

(edit: oops, put a placeholder where Lowhz should go, forgot to come back and put in the right name.)

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I can take a coat hanger and bent it straight to send a S/PDIF coax signal to a wall plate. It probably would work fine. Should I count on doing that every time?

The point is this: just because you did something wrong and it worked 1 time, doesn't mean it is going to work every time and without problems.
All those HDMI coax extenders are OEM'd by the same company, in China I believe. Some models and firmware are a little better than others but they all install the same and have the same warnings. One being "do not use F connectors or adapters on the coax". You are suppose to terminate the coax with a quality BNC connector on each end (sorry, Planet Waves push-on crap is not quality in the broadcast world).
Now it can work doing it with F connectors and adapters. But there is no guarantee it will work that way. Very important = no guarantee if you did get it to work in a non-supported way, that it will stay working.

One of my first service calls was to the home of a pro football player. Two things were wrong:

*One of the projector inputs was dead; its wiring was RG59 to an F connector, though an F to RCA adaptor to the projector. Wiggling the adaptor "fixed" the problem. This had worked well for over a year.

*When the projector was on, you could read STOP on the screen because the projector and laserdisc were left on after movies concluded. Extreme burn-in followed. We didn't try to fix this.

I have an update on my situation. I was able to get video through my personal tivo direct to the TV, then i tried doing it through my receiver which is an Yamaha A860 and it also worked. I'm thinking that maybe the Denon is not compatible with the balun. I tried the settings with scaler and video to Auto and it didn't work.
I might just take my yamaha over and put it in the same environment as the Denon and see if it works. If it does than i will know for sure it's the Denon that is the problem. Thanks for all help guys.

Yamaha over Denon every time.

The one time I attended a Denon training session, I came away with the feeling that I had just been exposed to a room full of True Believers. I don't see anybody getting that excited over Yamaha, but a product that just works is not as exciting as a product that FINALLY works or that causes you to wonder, every time, if it's going to work.
