Yes. Emergency! No internet, nothing. I power cycled modem, router, all switches, access points, etc. to no avail. Then I started unplugging things from the network switch. As soon as I pulled the network cable for the Blu-ray player, everything almost immediately began working again. Plugged the cable back in, down goes there network. Power cycle Blu-ray player, no problems in nearly a year. No idea how or why. But it has happened a few times on different projects with all different network gear, etc.

Yes, we're on our third SONY (7200) in 6 months at our showroom, complete failure (won't turn on even after power cycles).

On our Second Samsung UHD player as well.

But yes this is pretty common as noted; we've had best results with cheap LG's. No near term failures with any of theirs, but occasionally they lock up too, and we've been lucky all have been fixed with a power cycle (have had to get funky with a couple in the 3-5 year range when they have either wifi issues or bad network cards...but there old at that point so its expected).

Ernie, do you not use IP controlable surge protectors?

Actually, no, I don't yet do that.

In this case, there are a couple of gotchas. First, the BD player can lock up if it's turned off when in the streaming mode. Removing power wouldn't take it out of that mode... would it then be a cure?

Also, if the BD player brings down the network, would I still have access to the IP controlled device? If I... put it on a different subnet, perhaps? Even if that's possible, there's no way in this house to run an added CAT cable to cover this.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I've decided that I'm going to handle a dumb problem with a dumb solution. I'm going to install a short power cord/extender with a built-in switch. If the BD Player locks up, the client can kill the BD power for a minute, then restore it. This solution is network-proof and maybe even client-proof. We'll see.
