You may have seen my rants against flipped houses, since the two large ones I've had to deal with have had the stupidest problems I've ever seen, but at least I'm not the only one to bring this up of late: Buyer Beware, Those Picture Perfect Flipped Homes Can Be Masked Money Pits, at [Link: cnbc.com]

They're not doing the work so the next owner can have everything they want or need- they're only doing it to make money.

Was this some kind of secret?

as long as it looks nice for the 20 minutes someone walks through and the issues are addressed for inspection they are not there to have the house stand for centuries. Its a money making venture plain and simple.

Honestly if i were to get into flipping homes I would do the same thing, you have to. I wouldn't put the future owner into a known dangerous situation but I would certainly not spend days leveling a floor or putting down tile underlayment so the tiles wouldn't crack. as long as it looks good for the time being thats all that counts. its why you see so many people loosing their shirts on flips. :/

its sad but true. when I was looking for homes I purposely weeded out the "flips" because I know, sadly 95% of the general public does not know. I think we have all been on jobs too where we have seen contractors cut corners or cheap out, even in multi-million dollar homes.

Of course I got the opposite problem. Previous owner that I purchased my house from was a "handyman" lived in the house all of his life, so like most "professionals" he had" leaky pipes" and "faulty lights" The shoe makers kids go barefoot! :P

When I worked for a stereo store, one of the guys came up with a new slogan at the end of a sale meeting that concerned people "taking too long with some of the customers" - "We're not here to make friends, we're here to make money".

Some of those customers we "wasted time talking to" were teen-aged kids who wanted to learn about audio from people who wouldn't lie to them and ended up as customers of the store for over 35 years.

No sh*t. Putting a pig in a fancy suit still doesn't change the fact it's a pig. (No offense to any Liberals that might be pissed because I used a pig as an example and possibly hurt it's feelings)

Sorry, the apology was wrong, it should have read: F*ck any Liberals offended!

WTF is your deal? I don't label myself as lunatic liberal or redneck republican, but there's a guy on Twitter you should follow, I'm sure you'd love him :)

Is that a play on the comments about teaching a pig to sing?

The house i bought in December is a flipped house. It sold the year before for $70k and i bought it for $185k. The seller had it listed for $199k for 3 months before dropping the price.

Every square inch of the house has been redone. The floor plan was opened up, every wall/ceiling/floor/window/door was replaced. A second bath was added to make it a 3 bed 2 bath. 90% of the homes in my neighborhood only have 1 bath. New appliances, new 6' privacy fence to enclose the lot with a deck patio and pizza oven or firepit? Not sure what it is yet because it has been too cold to go out there and find out :). New roof new siding etc. They even replaced the roof and siding on the shed to make it match the house. All 4 of the 100'+ tall trees were trimmed back nicely and landscaping is all new. Finishes are all granite/stainless and even marble in the bathrooms.

I cant figure out how they made any money on this place. The basement is half crawl space and the flipper took the time to put in a floor and add 12 well built shelving units so the space can be used for storage. Every device pipe and outlet in the mechanical room is labeled. The inspector we hired was hard pressed to create a list of issues with the house.

Mac,
it's too cold for you to know what that thing is out there but the inspector is hard pressed to find any issues. This does not compute.

My son's house was pretty good except for three things:
*the chopped off dozen or so of camera leads left in the attic, irritating mostly to me
*the pipe off to the side of the garbage disposal that dumped kitchen water onto the dirt under the house
*the twenty feet of connection to the sewer that needed replacement to the tune of several thousand dollars, after rearing its ugly head by coming up through the toilets

*and, oh yes, wiring from the house to the separate garage where the wire colors changed twice on the way out there.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

A friend built a house in the PHX area and through the years, he has met and become friends with people who are in various trades through doing auto repairs while he wasn't working for GM at their proving ground. When it was time to build, he called in a lot of favors and it cost him a lot less than if he had just paid the normal way. He did some of the work, but building houses isn't his specialty, so he let the experts do it. It's possible the flipper did the same with your house.

I really like paved crawl spaces. So much easier to go in with a creeper and scoot around.

I dunno, just a common theme with that one, I guess. It just gets old, but at least he's consistent.

Vanessa and I stopped looking to buy homes. Everything was lipstick on a pig. We are building instead.

It should be criminal for people to flip houses.

I watched the Armando Montelongo on TV, and he used Mexican immigrants that he picked up at Home Depot, gave them very little direction, came in to shout when they messed everything up, fired all of them, hired two real guys and BEAT THEIR ASS on the budget and timeline (even though the predicament wasn't their fault in any way) and then came in at the end and still claimed to clear $100-150k.

Yeah, that is some bullshit.
