I need ethernet at a barn that was only wired with coax. It is RG6 but is high quality flooded cable and is currently being used for composite video (not important to keep). The wire length is around 450 ft.

It seems one of the most inexpensive ways to do this is with a pair of DirecTV DECA adapters. Does anyone know the maximum wire length in a point to point application? I know DECA is quite similar to MOCA, which is reportedly around 300 ft maximum wire length point to point.

Have also considered an Altronix ethernet over coax kit but it is about 10x more expensive. Supposedly that is good for about 2000 ft.

I'd say give it a try. Purchase the adapters at Amazon and return them if they don't work. I've used Actiontec MOCA adapters and DECA adapters with great success but have not used it on cable lengths exceeding about 150FT.

I have a house with moca that is really really nasty. Like 9 splitters, RG59, buried crimp connectors you name it. I had to get an accesspoint from the basement to the top floor office. Internal speeds are well over 200mbps.

Give it a try, order the actiontec moca 2.0 from amazon. If it doesn't work, then ship it back and give the altronix a try!

Or leave them on the truck. They are life savers

Yes, give it a try! I've got a client who bought a flip* in which the CAT cables had all been cut somewhere inside the walls. Using DECA, we've got7 DirecTV receivers, two BD Players on internet, a couple of computers, an alarm connection for a phone app, and remote garage door control. We also have a Doorbird that has been problematic since day 1, but I don't think it's the DECA, considering the othe successes.

Call Holland Electronics to ask how to do this.

One question: DECA is DirecTV's version of MoCA. Can DECA work if it's not connected to a DirecTV system?

*never buy a flip. Tell people not to buy them. Watch the shows and see if you can find the places where they do stupid things that will bite the new owner.

After it doesn't work, Check out Ubiquity for a Wireless link between the house and barn.

These work, although limited to 100Mbps

It can, but with caveats.

Every node needs its own power supply since there are no DirecTV boxes to power them. It's usually cheaper to buy adapters with included power supplies than buy separate power supplies after the fact.

DECA peacefully coexits only with sat signals, not OTA or CATV. So if the customer intends to send those on the same coax, DECA won't work.

We used these to connect an ip camera system we upgraded in an apartment project. Previously the complex was paying for a CATV internet connection in 5 buildings. This cost them about $55 per month per building. We installed an aerial coaxial cable to link the buildings into one large network.

Did this project three years ago and have not had one service call with the network.

I have several of those Altronix Ebridge kits sending IP to outbuildings through existing coax with several joins/barrel F-connectors with no issues whatsoever for over 4 years.  Pricing for the kit at a supplier would be less than what some charge for just one side of the transmission over coax.  Many products send POE with just a power supply or POE switch at head end for IP cameras which seem to add to the way higher cost like the Veracity below.

I have used the Veracity product Highwire HWPS-B and HWPS-C (kit) for ethernet extension and have not had any issues. I am amazed that at the end of the 800+ foot run of RG-6 that the -C unit showed 15 watts of available POE which I wasn't using, instead just plugging a short jumper cable from it into a poe switch for 2 gate IP cameras.  Cost is exceedingly more but no issues either. Good Luck.

This is true. DECA uses some of the spectrum that OTA and CATV use. However, it's possible to use a part of the spectrum that DECA doesn't use, and put some channels there. This raises the project to quite custom, though, as the channels have to be in a particular range of frequencies... can't just be the channels as you get them. (In my case I wanted to modulate a camera signal and send it to the same locations that used DECA for internet.)

I got the rundown on what to buy for a DECA system by calling Holland Electronics and asking them about these things. There's more on this, including some clarifications I made, at [Link: remotecentral.com].
