Chief has the CMA360 which is what we need. However, this will be outdoors (Sunbrite 55"), and the manual says "WARNING: DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT OUTDOORS!" I assume because parts of it will rust.

Peerless has some options, but they do not specify indoor or outdoor, so that might be a viable option. Peerless does have an outdoor rated mount with i-beam adapter that is nearly $1000.

Does anyone know of something similar to the Chief piece but weather rated? Or can I spray something on it to make it weather rated? Or should I just tell them that the new in thing is making this rust on purpose and it is a chic hipster feature? :P

Looking at the chief piece, I would bet that the only problem with using it outdoors is the threaded drive, and maybe the lock bolts will probably rust. So after the mount has been installed a few months, you aren't going to take it down without a blow torch and a grinder.

Look for aluminum threaded fasteners. Have it made. What are you hanging from this?

I've seen enough interesting things at a few metal wholesalers and shop suppliers in the Los Angeles area to think it won't be that hard to get parts and fabricate something. This stuff should be available in areas that have way more wet weather than we do!

Think aluminum bar stock pieced together, with a pipe flange bolted to it, all stainless bolts.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

OK, so it could rust. Take it to a place that finishes metals and have it powder coated, or painted with some kind of epoxy or urethane paint. It could be stripped very easily. The chrome rod could be replaced by stainless.

Or, you could buy some beam clamps, some stainless perforated plate and make your own. You could use a galvanized pipe flange to attach the pipe for the display.

This isn't hard to make but doing that isn't convenient, which is why they're manufactured.

Can you powder coat large threaded pieces that fit together nicely, and they'll still fit together nicely? I don't know the tolerances of the bolts seen in the Chief part, nor the thickness of powder coat.

The Chief part is intricate because it is adjustable in re the width of the beam it's on and the placement of the pipe thread. If you design one of these for your application, you only have to make one of these.

Look at the different parts of the Chief item. It's got a bottom plate, a pipe flange, and end clamps. Let's imitate that. The following is like the mounting method of the Chief but does not have the flexibility to be used on all different sizes of beams. You only need it for one size and you have to make it, so make one for the one size you need.

These instructions are in order of thought from start to finish, but aren't in the order you'd actually do them:

Start with an aluminum Pipe Flange, [Link: tridentdirect.com].
Get a hunk of aluminum bar, 4" x 1/2" thick by the length you determine by the end of this description.
Determine where the pipe flange should mount on a 1/2" thick x 4" wide aluminum bar.
Mount it there. Don't let anything stick up above the bar. Use Loctite.
Cut the bar so it's 3/4" wider on each end than the I Beam.
Cut two spacers from the bar, 5/8" wide. (These have to be thicker than the part of the IBeam that's going to be captured by the mount.)
Cut two clamp plates from the bar, 1 1/2" wide.
Use stainless bolts to assemble, top to bottom, the 1 1/2" wide pieces, the 5/8" pieces, and the main plate.
Drill and tap two holes in the clamp plates.
Insert stainless bolts into the clamp plates and tighten. Use Loctite.

Thank me.

We still haven't seen what will be mounted to this or exactly where it will be located- might be a good time for that.

how exposed will it be? Hit it with something like this.

[Link: rustoleum.com]

hardware with stainless steel bolts, rub exposed metal with WD40, you should be fine as long as the environment isn't too harsh.

But they do sell an i-beam mountable TV mount in several lengths in an outdoor rated iteration. We may see if that will work with the 55" Sunbrite. It should, but the mount is not cheap.

Otherwise, I will just use the Chief part and spray it with something after install. It is going under a cabana at an outdoor pool area at a hipster apartment complex. It will be covered so will not get rain or snow directly. Only the humidity to worry about coming off the pool.
