I have a gentleman who found a new in box CD carousel he wants me to add to his system, Onkyo DXC-390. Onkyo has those proprietary RI control ports. Did I dream this up or is there a way to adapt that to an IR input?

I did some tinkering a few years ago, and was controlling an Onkyo TV SV9041 with the RI input from a GlobalCache through a self-made adapter box. IIRC, The adapter box just inverted the levels: no signal -> 5V, signal -> 0V.

Xantech used to make widgets that converted IR to the various proprietary control schemes. I wish I could be more specific but I havn't looked into it in years. That's where I would start though.

That is where I started. Whoever answered the phone had no idea what I was talking about.

Well that sucks. I'm sorry hear that. I spent some time googling the part today and from what I understand Xantech never made one for the Onkyo RI language.

I installed a bunch of them years ago.(the player)

Save yourself a ton of time and place an emitter inside the case.

8 to 10 screws, pull the cover, and it's wide open and the IR receiver is easy to locate.

There's even a gap in the case at the back corners to pass your wire through.

15 minutes if it's your first time.

And it works!
Every day is a good day.......some are just better than others!

Proud to say that my property is protected by a high speed wireless device!

Clearly not as fulfilling as re-engineering a 3.5 input but it won't come back to haunt you!

Well, looks like it's what I'll have to do. I might even have a 3.5 mil jacky poo thing I can drill a hole for. Indeed not as fulfilling I don't feel as smart as I would have if I had a xantech piece . Oh well, life goes on.

Thanks guys!

Well, there are always ("always") low-tech solutions...

Let me just describe how I built my "Xantech box": I used an opto-coupler, 4N-something, thus achieving an electrical isolation between input and output -- NOT creating ground loops. The opto coupler consists on an LED and an NPN transistor. The LED is connected to the input, possibly with a resistor to be on the safe side. That way, the other sides sees the box just as a stick-on (IR-)LED. The emitter of the NPN transistor in connected to ground of the RI-device. The collector of that transistor goes as signal output to the RI device. Finally a resistor, possibly a few hundred ohms, from the emitter to the "+5v" of the RI-device, available on the 3.5 plug.

To call this a "proprietary protocol" is not very informative.
