I wrote about and recently installed a DIY system from relative start-up Abode. They have the required features for a UL rating for security (e.g., back-up battery, etc.), optional pay-as-you-go professional monitoring, cellular back-up.
The hub has z-wave, zigbee, Wi-Fi and pro-security radios.
So far, I'm really impressed. I've never installed anything before, and I was able to do it myself, integrating with Nest (co, stat, camera), Kwikset door lock and some Z-Wave devices, plus Abode's own water sensor, PIR/camera (like Alarm.com's image sensor), siren, keypad, etc.
With the old house we just bought in San Antonio, I am going to try to understand the DIY market a little better.
