I have 3 HP laptops for my kids. All same models, core i3, running windows 10. Each one works great for a few weeks, then at some point get the little yellow warning on the wifi symbol, and if you hover over it, the message unidentified network no internet access. If I go in properties, the IP address the laptop shows to have looks like something from the ISP (charter) not my network. I have been fixing this by going into the network properties and if the dns is automatic, change it to static. If it's static, change it to automatic. This seems to make the laptop clear out all settings and reconnect to the network.

And the router and AP are araknis.

Are your wifi bands, 2.4 and 5.0, the same name? And are these laptops old enough to not see the 5.0? Or if they do, are they around the time where 5.0 was in the testing phase?

The SSID's are the same. And the laptops were bought at the beginning of the school year.

At my house, I use DSL service. I have the modem set to bridge mode, and it moves the signal from there. The model still would broadcast a wifi signal, even though I wasn't interested in that aspect of it. Getting into the modem and turning off the radio solved the problem here.

My modem doesn't have wifi as an option. But one friend did suggest it might be a dns issue on the modem. But I hate to think about even calling charter for this

Double-check what the IP they're getting is. If it's like a 169.xxx address, then that's the "couldn't get a DHCP addresses" default, which would point to a general WiFi or router issue.

Also, just try turning WiFi on/off or airplane mode to see if that clears it as well.

Not to be a wise ass, but have you rebooted the router? I have found that it often helps.

Is the IP address 169.x.x.x? That looks like the connection from the router to the access point is being lost.

If you go left click on the WiFi icon and select 'Open the Network and sharing center', one of the options on the left side is 'Manage wireless networks'- click on your SSID and drag it to the top, put the school's SSID below that one. Also, look at the properties (hover the cursor and right click, select Properties) for your network and make sure it's set to connect automatically when in range.

Problem is I have it working now and can't check. But you may be right. It may be a 169 address.

just curious, i assume your using araknis for the router. next time this happens reboot the router to see if this solves your issue. not sure its a coincidence or not but my office printer ($750) from HP did NOT like the araknis router. I fought and fought with it before giving up and pulling my test router out and putting back in my edge router. I say this because the ONLY thing that would fix it would be to reset the router.

My printer was static and DHCPed but frequently would go to the 169.x.x.x scheme. everything else on the network would be fine. Weirdest thing.

It could also just be the printer is a HP printer and HP printers SUCK...all printers SUCK.

I have tried rebooting both the router and the computer. That doesn't fix it. Your printer is more likely just that HP had a problem. I was told they kept using a surpluss of outdated wifi chips. I saw hp printer problems on other routers

I've seen this on a windows 7 laptop before. Just randomly deciding that a network is public and wont let me reassign. I've had to force a default gateway to make it work.

No idea the cause.

Had this once with one of my personal laptops. Drove me nuts for weeks!
Turned off energy saving features on the laptop and it never happened again.

How many devices do you have in your home?

What is the max number of clients on the DHCP server?

What DHCP leases do you see in the router?
