yes they do well sort of The only thing I can find right now is cfl friendly and their sunlight filter.
Its not water proof or even resistant so if its exposed to elemints you might need to put it in a enclosure.

SUN490 FOR 490 MICRO LINK
SUN780 FOR 780 J-BOX RECEIVER

All these sensors will improve your chance of getting a sensor outside to work. Keep in mind the biggest problem installing any IR sensor outside is the sun. There are many natural sources of Infrared in the cosmos. It is a very difficult task to block these sources and still allow a relatively small signal pass. Your remote is powered by one or two 1.5 volt batteries and the sun is powered a thermonuclear reaction.

I heard of many successful installations but I have also heard of many installations with major problems. I’m sure there is a science to finding a good location outside to install a sensor but a trial-error process is probably the fast way to get the job done. Selecting the right sensor is also important. You must also consider the time of day and year when trying to find a quite spot.

In order to avoid these problems and get the job done quickly and reliably, you might want to install a keypad instead. You can sell it as a “feature”, not a compromise. Your customer will have not have bring a remote every time they outside.

I’m kind of partial to ELAN’s Z-100 but other manufacturers have similar products.

Good Luck.

I don't know if this will work in your application, but consider the idea of mounting a microlink under a soffit. It dramatically reduces the exposure from direct sunlight. Unfortunately, if the house is white, or you are near a pool, or you wear mirrors on your shoes (doesn't everybody?), the reflections will lock you up. Xantech waterpad is clearly the consistently reliable piece I have worked with, with the added benefit of not having to find the remote.

Wouldn't an RF remote be the thing for outdoor use?

Well, obviously. But then, there was a time (believe it or not) when nobody had an IR remote, or an ultrasonic remote, or a wired remote, or.......

The point being that, if reliable outdoor remote operation is important enough, he could always get one!

I've place the receiver in as shadowed a location as possible and had good results with the exception of range, pending brightness of the sun, range has been between 8' and about 30' using one of the Xantech receivers. The way I see it is getting within a couple of meters from the receiver is better than going all the way back to the gear.
Although the Xantech waterproof keypad sounds smarter. (unfortunately alot more expensive too)
Hope this is helpful.

A RF remote suggested by Larry Fine sounds interesting and might work for this specific application. Does anybody know of a “learning” RF remote?

In a previous life, I worked on a device called the TeleMaster. Basically, it was a phone interface to IR generator. It had a couple of cool bells and whistles such as voice prompting.

With the TeleMaster, a user was able to control his or her components via a phone (this application calls for a wireless phone). The TeleMaster never made it to the market for several reasons. But, I wonder if a similar product exist today?

Maybe he can find a TERK LEAPFROG, it turns
any remote into a RF remote. OR maybe
he pop-in and give us a hmmm, ah, or
" I don't think that would work" or
something.

Hey if you have a ir flooding problem from the sun you can take the tinted cover off of the receiver and place a small piece of newspaper between it and the receiver.
