I don't know how to delete this thread, so lesson learned

I understand no special chipped USB cable is needed, and I have the MS Mobile Device program running.

True.

Having a new USB cable to replace the bad one does wonders!

I have an older GPS receiver that kept crashing during update attempts. I thought that it was time to send it to satellite heaven -- until I replaced the USB cable that I had been using. The GPS is fine, the cable is on its way to recycle heaven.
