personally, i like the strong, bitter tasting starbucks coffee.

Simon, i would imagine that the coffee is just different than what YOU call coffee. As such, im sure many would find what ever type of coffee you drink down in bumfugg equally appalling.

The difference between you and me is that I've actually tried the coffee commonly drunk in your country. Can you say the same?

If you truly enjoy bitter, lip pursing swill, then it's just because you have not tasted a superior version. You should get out more. The rest of the world doesn't actually revolve around the USA. And the fact that something is consumed or popular in the USA does not make it superior quality (often quite the reverse). As someone who travels the world as part of their job, i think i'm far more qualified to judge this than you are.

If you want the truth of the matter, read this article.

And you accuse Americans of being arrogant. The reality is that most people like and find comfort in whatever they are raised on. In the region where I am, most locals think a big bowl of pinto beans with big chunks of onion, a side of collard greens, and a cake of cornbread is the best meal ever. It's not because it's a good meal. It's what they grew up on. Some like to take their cornbread and break it up in a glass of milk (some like onions in it too). Personally, I'd starve if those where my only options. I'd also die of dehydration if any coffee product was the only beverage available.
Civil War reenactment is LARPing for people with no imagination.

Times two.

I took one sip of coffee when I was in high school. Spit it out and never tried it again.

Cornbread? Love it. Especially the old cast iron frying pan way of making it.

Pinto's? Aw hell no. Wife loves them with onions.

We don't talk about her love of Pinto's and my love of White Castles.... :-)

Software engineers live on coffee for the most part. If you try to stop, they'll eventually find you staring blanking at the screen, with drool all down the front of your shirt. If you are lucky they can hook you up to the intravenous Mr. Coffee and bring you back, but it doesn't always work. It's one of the ugly little secrets of the trade.

He attacked first with that Bumfugg comment.
It was all good up until then.

According to the article i posted, Americans drink coffee for the caffeine hit to get through work etc. Aussies don't. We drink it for relaxation, socializing and for the flavour which is savoured. This is why the only Starbucks left in Australia are at airports. They failed dismally because we don't buy coffee just for the caffeine hit and free Wi-Fi.

As mentioned before, i used Uber quite a bit over there and i had to post this clip.

The guy in the band with the big bushy beard and leather cap was one of my Uber drivers. He was polite, well spoken, eloquent and clearly had a strong social conscience, at least on the matters we discussed. A far cry from how he presents himself in this clip.

I love coffee, and can drink it in many ways. But I especially like a dark roast. I have some friends that can't stand dark roast.

However if a dark roast has been roasted too much it dries the beans out. So there is a difference among dark roasts.

I'm not real crazy about Starbucks coffee, I especially like Peet's... Who I think I also originated in Seattle but not entirely sure of that.

I prefer coffee over hot tea, but I love a good English dark and many green teas too

I would be very sad about a world without coffee.
Chasing Ernie's post count, one useless post at a time.

It would be sadder still without good wine, or even bad wine.... :-)

Darker roasts (Italian, French) take over the flavor profile of the coffee. Most of what you get is the roast.

Really good coffee (the beans not the liquid) over roasted would be a total waste. However, mediocre beans roasted a few degrees short of catching fire have their flaws covered.

There's definitely something about breaking open a bag of freshly ground coffee, or popping the top off the grinder after you've ground a batch. It's an amazing smell.

There you go again. You tend to convey your superiority. It's seen through, however, for what it is (possibly inferiority complex? Lack of self worth? Low self esteem? The list is long. Take your pick).

For the record, as you spout your better-than-you attitude, Ive lived abroad, have taken the non-beaten path in far corners of the earth. I will add, on my own dime as well. So next time before you judge and take an open-mouth-insert-foot approach, please step off the high horse and open your eyes just a tad bit more. You are actually more clueless than you really believe. You often prove it right here in this forum. Did you expect a curtsy from the North Carolinian's? I bet you did. You actually make me chuckle a bit. And right on cue, as expected. You're so predictable. And for that, I thank you.
