I have am bidding on an installation for a conference room. The clients use a lot of iOs devices. They want to be able to mirror the image of the devices (one at a time) to an Apple TV. The perfect place would be to hide the Apple TV in a Versa box (recessed utility box) behind the 60" - 75" TV.
Does anyone see an issue with "never" seeing the Apple TV again if it is in the Versa box? Power cycles can be done with a breaker. I believe the remote is bluetooth. Any other possible issues I can anticipate?

Thanks!

Murphy says the harder it is to get to, the more likely problems will occur. I hate Murphy!

It should be fine as long as there is just a little air for cooling.

Yeah! It's an Apple TV!

I would leave the lightning cable plugged into the ATV and coiled up behind the TV so if it needs servicing or if it bricks you can walk over with a laptop and fix it without pulling the TV down!

Velcro it to the corner of the back of the TV or use something like this [Link: amazon.com]

I've used straps to slide behind the wall mount and make super basic L bracket towards the top of the TV. The ATV can sit or velcro on the bracket.

Then the average Joe who walks into the conference room will know it's a great system when he sees the Apple product! ;) (and it's accessible for issues)

"Sure, and lets upgrade that TV to a wall arm mount so one person will be able to service it for you."

Remember the 'clients' need to be on the same network with the AppleTV, network security considerations.

Not really. They just have to have Bluetooth and WiFi turned on on their iOS device. Then the Apple TV can be seen and mirrored to. All that has to be done is to select the ATV on the iOS device and enter the passcode that is displayed from the ATV.

At least that is the case with the newest ATV, not sure about older ones.

If it's hard-wired, the box won't matter unless they want to use a wireless keyboard or that BT remote, or if they have other media devices, why not control it via IP and a universal remote of some kind?

You could always use a plastic enclosure, too.

KOT,

Thanks, didn't know you could AirPlay without WiFi by using Bluetooth.

Requirements:
iDevice with 8.0+
AppleTV (Gen3A+) w/ 7.0+
Mac (2012+) with 10.10+.

You still need wifi turned on the iOS device. The BT just does the handshake per say. Then once connected, it's done peer to peer wifi.

Not if it has an ethernet port and the ATV's WiFi is turned off.

You can't- AirPlay is IP, Bluetooth is a completely separate method and for ATV, the Bluetooth is only for wireless keyboards and not streaming.

Both are correct. Reading further it STREAMS over a WiFi channel after linking via Bluetooth. So the AppleTV CAN'T be using a WiFi connection to a network at the time.

Found this blurb:
"Peer-to-Peer discovery is initiated using Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) when a user selects AirPlay on an iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite v/10.10 device. This causes the device and the Apple TV to visit Wi-Fi channel 149 in the 5 GHz band and Wi-Fi channel 6 in the 2.4 GHz band, where the discovery process continues. Once the user selects an Apple TV and AirPlay starts, the Wi-Fi radios timeshare between channel 149 and whichever infrastructure channel each device is currently using. If possible, the AirPlay sender roams to the same infrastructure channel the Apple TV is using. If neither device is currently using an infrastructure network, the devices will utilize Wi-Fi channel 149 only for AirPlay. Peer-to-peer mirroring adheres to 802.11 standards, sharing Wi-Fi bandwidth with other Wi-Fi devices."

I don't see how you can turn wifi off on an Apple TV. At least on the 4th gen.

I am currently doing AirPlay. With the ATV connected to Ethernet, iPhone to LTE with wifi and BT turned on. I am able to stream video to the ATV from YouTube as well as mirroring the iPhone display. (Seeing this being typed out.) If I were to turn wifi off on the phone, it will stop sending the audio and video will drop. But the ATV will continue to display the control center from the iPhone at the moment I clicked wifi off.

Having BT turned off doesn't affect me at all. Perhaps because it's already done that handshake?
