Finally about to start fitting out a project we have been involved in for the last three years, and I am currently revisiting the specification to make sure its up to date.

I have been looking at the network switch options, and given that we are installing some JAP 3G units I am looking at substituting the normal Cisco SG switches we would have used with JAP, to Luxul as it seems to be the current preferred JAP option. The AV units also seem like a good idea in order to give visibility of operation on the front whilst hiding all the connections at the rear.

Does anyone have any good/bad experiences with Luxul switches they are willing to share in terms of general use, setting up VLANS, general compatibility or required settings for operation with JAP/Savant/Lutron/Autonomics/Kaleidescape/Sony-TV/IP-CCTV/VOIP systems?

Last September we had one to have a play with, and in the limited time we had it, it seemed to be fine with everything we threw at it (didn't have any JAP to try though), but obviously this was an isolated test bench setup rather than a production installation and results in the real world can be far removed from those in a limited test environment.

Being as they are quite expensive switches I would like to know that the added investment is worthwhile and not just going to be a gold plated clusterf@ck!!

I am a great believer in selling a rock solid network and I am looking for some feedback that gives me a feelgood factor with this as a product choice.

Also whilst on the subject of switches....we quite often install small Unifi WiFi systems, i.e. 2-4 AC-PRO WAPS. The Unifi 8-port Tough Switch Pro looks to be reasonable value to use as the POE switch (compared against the Draytek 1090's that we normally use). Again, does anyone have good or bad experiences with these units?

TIA

Nick

What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired?

JAP / Luxul distributor here. We have sold WWWWAAAAYYYY more Luxul switches at this point than Cisco and we still have RMAed less Luxul products than Ciscos. The luxul switches are much quieter as well. No jet air plane fans. They switch video slightly faster and as you mentioned they have all of the ports on the back.

If you are using JAP and Savant then you would use JAD config to setup the switch and then use our tool we created to create a Savant profile.

I highly recommend keeping the JAP Luxul switch on its own and then doing what ever you want with other switches on the network.

We only use Luxul for JAP systems, but they have been solid for us so far. Couldn't comment on their performance or ease-of-use outside of that limited use case. We use Araknis and Cisco-Meraki switches for everything else.

Would not recommend the Ubiquiti TOUGHSwitch as they only support passive PoE, so they wouldn't be useful for powering anything other than UniFi APs or other passive PoE-compliant devices (rare).

That was the plan...currently looking to use:

XMS-5248P in data cab for client network points (i.e. room data outlets)
AMS-4424P in AV rack for JAP
AMS-2616P in AV rack for IPCams Unifi Wi-Fi, and rack based devices

I plan to couple these with our preferred Draytek 3900 router.

Thanks, that is a valid point. initially I was just looking to avoid using POE injectors for the Unifi units but by using a cost conscious switch, so I guess in this instance they would be okay, but if we then wanted to put some VOIP phones or IP cams in at a later date then we might hit a wall....

Sounds good.. Keep in mind the 2616P only has 16 POE ports. The first 8 are not POE. So use those ports for non POE devices.

UniFi AC-Lite and LR are 24v passive PoE, so if you go with Luxul you will have to use the power injectors.

We only use the AC-PRO's. 48V and work fine with standard POE
