I am running a Roku 3 into the HDMI input of a Samsung 4k ku6300 TV. I am taking the toslink digital audio out of the tv and running it into a digital audio input on my Denon 3803 receiver. The question I have is this...
If the stream being output from the Roku 3 is in true 5.1 Dolby Digital, and I have the Denon receiver surround mode set to Dolby Digital will my audio out of the Denon be playing true 5.1 Dolby Digital sound?
Thanks for the answer.

You're going to need to go to the Roku menu for that answer.

It depend; some TVs only output surround from their internal apps, not external source inputs. Check the TV documentation to see if it states this.

From crutchfield for your model:

"optical digital audio output (can pass Dolby® Digital/DTS multichannel or 2-channel audio from connected sources)"

Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA can only be had via HDMI. Go from the Roku to the receiver, then to the tv.

You say you are running it, so look at the Denon's display and count the little speaker icons.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

And/or, start the source material streaming and put the Denon in "auto" surround mode. The display should change to tell you. If it says "Dolby Surround" or whatever, yes. If it says something like "Pro Logic" or another simulated surround, nope.

Since most of the popular services steam Dolby Digital+ ... and the TV doesn't say it with decode DD+ to DD for the optical output ... I'm going to assume he's asking because he's only getting 2ch to the Denon from the TV.

The Denon 3803 does not have HDMI connections (iform).

Brian, what you need is the new Roku Ultra. It has an optical output that does output 5.1 for those services (unlike the older Roku4's optical output).
Or buy a new audio receiver - new Roku is much cheaper.

Thanks for the help everyone.
Question based on the answer from Mr. Ryan Posner...
Does this mean when my Denon 3803 receiver is set to the
"auto" surround mode the receiver automatically puts itself into the proper surround sound mode based soley on the audio signal it is seeing?

"auto" = automatically, yes

Does anybody know of any exceptions to this?

Let's keep in mind that the "auto" function will provide the best format that said receiver from 2004 will give someone.

This will also depend on the source material.

This will also depend on what the Samsung will output, may depend on the day.

Based on what you're concerned with, I would recommend moving into a new receiver with HDMI capability (for the best surround formats) and one of the revamped rokus for expanded 4k capability on your 4k TV.
