Talk about a question that you hate to ask. That means that a client has asked me the question. Wants to play old VHS tapes. Controlling with a CCP remote, will likely be a mess. HDMI output is important, since some new TVs don't have anything but HDMI inputs.

Agreed. Pretty sure every VCR has been discontinued. So, this is going to be a used/eBay solution. Go for a Sony or maybe a Panasonic, and pray for discrete codes.

I just got Toshiba dvr620 to covert home movies from vhs to dvdr. The only code amongst 18 dvd Toshiba codes in CCP to work was 188. Yes it has hdmi out.

How many VHS movies do they have and what are they?

Home Movies-send the tapes or clients to a place that will convert to a digital format.

Movies-Unless they are the Original Star Wars before the special editions tell the client to rebuy the ones they actually watch on a digital format.

Adult Content-introduce them to the internet.

Analog video is dead and VHS is dead, you will waste more time trying to figure something out than the job is worth

Sony RDR-VX555 or 535 is THE one of you can find it. Discretes, HDMI or component outputs everything. Works really well to transfer VHS to DVD just takes a little practice.

There are probably a ton of them on eBay because it's a DVD recorder and nobody had the patience to figure it out.

Did that have a discrete for DVD/VCR, too? I don't remember seeing any that didn't just toggle.

It does have discretes for DVD and VCR. It has discrete power too but there's a little bit of a trick you have to use the OEM remote to get into the system menu and set the remote control ID to 1 (don't do that until you have ID one set up on the third-party remote won't be able to operate it or switch it back). After that pull only the discrete power on and power off from whatever code set is for Sony DVD model DVPS300

There are a few on eBay, some NIB but take them with a grain of salt.

Just search "VCR with hdmi" on eBay. There is an used Panasonic DVD recorder with VHS. [Link: ebay.com]

I have two of the LG units at the beach, but they only output component. Planned on using one of them for the off air tuner, since I have two commercial displays that have no tuners on the matrix. I like to have an antenna back up for thos etime when DTV goes down in the heavy storms.

Both were out of box but not really used. Still have all the packing, remotes, etc, etc. Just need something to upconvert from component to HDMI....

I've installed a Toshiba for a client, but that was two years ago. It had component, composite, and HDMI outputs, but I think the HDMI only worked with the DVD part of it.

There's something about the device choice versus output choice that drove me crazy when I tried to program an integrated remote to work the machine. It was easier to work with the factory remote.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
