I own a Denon AVR 3803 receiver. I am confused as to what surround sound mode I should use for the sources in my system which are...
1. Time Warner HD Cable Box
2. Sony DVD model DVP-CX985V
3. ROKU model 3
My speaker setup is center channel, front left & right, rear surround left & right, and sub-woofer.

Thank you for the help.

That depends on what you're watching.
Most people like to listen to actual encoded content.
Others do 5 channel stereo so that stuff encoded in 2ch still plays thru all the speakers.

Yes, that Denon has no HDMI inputs. So either he is using an HDMI audio extractor, which means he's only getting 2ch stereo for most of his services. Or he's got the HDMI going to a TV, then optical out from there back to the receiver. Which still could mean he's only getting 2ch stereo from his services on the Roku. And everything else if he's running everything thru the TV 1st.

Need to replace that Denon with a modern receiver. HDMI has made it so it is a necessary thing in any surround system these days.
Or you can get the new Roku Ultra, which has an optical output that actually works for 5.1 for that old Denon.

Sony DVD??? You know you can get a new Sony Bluray for less then $99 right.

Don't disparage a guy trying to use what we'd consider an antique unless you're willing to disparage him and then, at no cost, replace his antique. Old stuff is still usable. Recognize the abilities and the limitations and move on!

A client has a Denon of similar vintage. When we added the Roku4, I ran the HDMI output through an audio extractor, then used the pull string I installed through the smurf tube in the chimney space back in 2002 and ran the HDMI line into the TV.

Yes, it's primitive. Yes, the audio is ProLogic because there's only two channels of audio coming out of the audio extractor. And... without buying a new receiver, this lady's bedroom system now has Roku.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have a similar setup for my own home use. In my case it is a Yamaha RX-Z9, a $4K+ receiver that would be very expensive to replace.

That is why I also suggested the new Roku Ultra. I don't have a 4K TV yet but the optical output on it does 5.1 for the services, unlike the Roku4 which had an issue with that.
