I need a device where I can extract digital audio from HDMI. Basically from my projector I need to run an optical cable to the Sonos play bar. At the projector there is a HD base T HDMI Balin. It's a Control4 leaf Balin. What device can I use, to extract toss link from HDMI?

It's a balun, not a balin; except it's an extender, not a balun.

Does it make more sense to extract audio on the source side rather than the projector side? $n@p makes one, as do a hundred other companies. Google search for "HDMI audio extractor".

As you can imagine, if you want to know what this is about, just ask:
It's a balun, not a balin; except it's an extender, not a balun.

Knowing stuff like this is helpful and can take you from being a drone who can only do what he's seen before and turn you into someone who can come up with a new approach to a problem.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ive used these several times with no issues - never with an extender though - just going through matrix switches and receivers.

Thanks guy. I know what a BALUN is. Siri does not.

Source side is to far away.

It may be important to consider a Dolby Digitil compatible device too.

Just bought a Vanco unit, extracts 2 ch. analog and 5.1 optical and coax. Haven't used it yet.

I would be interested to know if any of these units work without the HDMI output connected.

A few months ago I bought one to use with a Control4 EA1 controller outputting analog audio to a Snap mini-amp. The thing wouldn't work unless I had a cable connected to the HDMI output.

The Kanex works. I used one last week on an EA1 without anything connected to the output.

Curious about any lip sync issues using one of these devices. Have a current project I am quoting where TV has HDMI inputs and output is only digital coax, this no optical for connection to a playbar. So could go HDMI to optical on input or digital coax to optical on the output.
