I've always wanted a DJI - currently my preference goes to the Phantom 3 Professional, Phantom 4, or the new compact Mavic Pro.

In reality I have a cheap Chinese one with GPS but no onboard camera, and the lack of camera/FPV really limits enjoyment. Granted I can stick a GoPro on it and see stuff afterwards, but the fun is seeing a live feed (and knowing what you're filming).

(Video cap from an old GoPro Hero 3 Black).

I can't remember if you are located in Canada or the States. If Canada, was is the regulated max height you can fly?

So wish I had pulled the trigger a few weeks ago when they were on sale for 399 :(

If you have a Roku, there is a drone channel. It has all kinds of videos and reviews. I have been looking at them for a couple months and been saving up some money but not much in that piggy bank after Christmas.
I was looking at the dji 3 and the yuneec.

Don't forget that any "drone" (i.e. Remote controlled airplane or helicopter) weighing more than an unladen swallow must now be registered and tagged on the "Federal Drone Registry" for a fee of $25 dollars per 5 years. If u are caught flying without a registration, you can be fined $27,000 if I recall correctly.

Or, conversely, you can tell the over-reaching Federal bureaucrats, "My Drone, My Choice!"

The registration fee is $5 and is good for 3 years. Registering takes just a moment online. You just provide your name, mailing address, and CC info. That is it. They will email you a certificate that you are supposed to have on you anytime you fly (can be kept as a file on your phone), and you have to mark the reg # on the drone itself with permanent marker, sticker or engraving.

I just registered a Parkzone Corsair last month...$25 fee for one sheet of paper with a number on it and an entry in a useless government database.

Got to be cReful. Tons of letitimate looking websites that do exactly what you can do. You can register directly with the FAA. It's $5 bucks.

There are websites you can register legitamely that charge more, some of which will send you a sticker with the reg number. All you have to do though is register at the FAA site and label your drone yourself.

I got to looking at drones online, and have really gotten the urge to buy one. The only reason I haven't is because I keep thinking that after about the first 20 minutes, I'll be like "ok, that was fun, but now what do I do with it"

So, if anyone has one, what do you do with it? Also, any info on brands or models would be appreciated too.

So, buy a really cheap one. A friend of mine bought one that was about $60 and replacement parts are cheap. I think the seller was Tomtop, on ebay.

That way, if you become irreversibly bored, decide that you hate the thing and want nothing more for it to go away, you can see how high it will fly and auger it into the ground.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

The ONLY reason to do this would be to see the difference between these cheapies and a more polished drone. Without GPS and all the other features, they are a pita to fly, which results in more crashes and less enjoyment. The flying is just a part of the funx the video and pictures, for me, is the larger part. For this you need a better bird.

I got the Phantom3 Pro.
Still like it, but don't get to fly much due to time constraints.
Took it up last time to see why the school bus was late.
Saved my daughter some time waiting in the cold.

Well that SUCKS! I searched FAA drone registry and went to what appeared to be the FAA sign-up form. I'll look into this when I'm back at my desk. Those bastards stole an 18 of Corona from me!!?! Grrrr.

Don't get too freaked out, it likely was a legitimate site to register, you just spent more. At least you know what to do when you are up for renewal.
