EDIT: This was solved today as they looked into their system and realized their computers were set to kill the video after five minutes or so. No video and the projector goes off in ten minutes or so. Problem was not a problem, it was a setting.

Original post:
A client's classroom projectors were stolen and they bought Optoma HD-27s to replace them. Access to the rooms is limited, so there was some rushing to get out after hanging them.

I finished installing them yesterday. Today they sent me an email asking if I know why they're shutting down after "not too much time." I've asked for more detail, but if anyone is familiar with this model and such a quirk, I'd like to know about it.

The manual shows to functions that could turn it off: Sleep and Auto Power Off. Both should come set to leave the projector on, and the client is checking.

Thanks.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Please ask them to check the colors of the indicator lights on the unit.

They are labeled Power LED(Green) Temp(erature) LED and Lamp LED

note the flashing or no flashing on each.

Also a possible flashing of red of the lamp or temp led before shut off.

If the "Lamp" goes solid red... contact service its definitely not good.
If Temp goes solid for 20 sec the projector is overheated ... this will stop the unit from staying on and will shut off after 20 seconds
If Temp flashes for 10 sec the fan is failing or has failed .

You indicated in your post, that they have more than one projector. And you seem to indicate, that more than one (if not all) are doing this shutdown.

It would be near impossible to get brand new projectors, that were all defective. Then again, who knows where they purchased them from.
Assuming the projectors are good, this would point me towards those menu settings for auto shutoff (even if the default should have been no).

If the LEDs on the projector indicate it is shutting down from heat (as mentioned above), are the projectors mounted near HVAC vents. It's winter, heat is turned on.

If they are mounted too close to the ceiling they can breathe in their own warm exhaust and shut down for heat. I've seen this before with Optoma and BenQ both.

Thanks, everybody!

I missed the LED indication information, if it's in the manual. I'll see what they have to say about this.

They were purchased from Best Buy and appeared to be new in the box.

They're a couple of feet from the ceiling, and not near heat ducts. The air up there is about 80 degrees.

Thanks so much for your help. They're more than forty miles away... but I'm going to be not far from them on Friday, so I can stop in or whatever we get to by then.

I just got an email from them. Their computer was set to turn off video after a few minutes... video went off... projector went off soon after.

Pilot error.

So, you had no idea there were LED indicators showing power status? This is on what - every projector made in the history of projectors?
how in the hell does ernie make money?

The school, on a budget, wanted the projectors installed and for me to quit billing them for time. I installed them. They worked for me. No time was allotted for me to check out what would happen if something went wrong. Chicagoinstaller's response gave me exactly what was needed after I posted just before going to bed just after midnight.

I knew there were LEDs; I just had not gotten to the point, nor time spent, to look up the blinking/color indications and what they would mean.
