finally getting around to doing my living room and just cannot decide what todo for surround sound. Like the burnt out thread i just dont care and nothing excites me any more in this industry. But like many of you since we deal with this stuff everyday we just dont really care todo our systems like we would our clients. But maybe its worth trying out a 7.1 system or atmos?

Due to space constraints in my living room I cant do floor standing speakers. I could MAYBE get away with killing two birds with one stone and using my 2ch system book shelf's as part of my front L+R speakers (Kef R300's) on the built in cabinets next to the fireplace but for right now assume its not wife approved.

my couch is 13 feet back from the fireplace and the room is roughly 24 ft long. the width of the room is ~14ft.

Cant decide on speakers, leaning towards Triad ceiling LCR's for the fronts and then the in-ceiling Surrounds but also debating on using the Small Aperture speakers from James (or triad) to match the 4" lights I'll be installing.

So what do you say guys, 5.1 7.1 or Yolo it and make my ceiling look like swiss cheese and go with atmos?

Triad offered us an in house atmos experience and it got me excited again about surround sound!

That hasn't happened in a LONG time!

If you watch a lot a movies you'll love it!

I pretty much watch the news,Velocity,The Discovery Channel, and other boring stuff so it isn't high on my to do list in my own home at this time but,it is impressive!

I didn't mention it to my wife at this time because she IS a movie gal and would probably consider it a must have!

Maybe after I get the big beam covered deck and outdoor kitchen done!
Every day is a good day.......some are just better than others!

Proud to say that my property is protected by a high speed wireless device!

ATMOS is one of the biggest steps in my theatre enjoyment in a long, long time.
I would suggest it makes a much bigger difference for me than UHD / HDR.
5.1.2 is awesome, 5.1.4 is much bettererer.

The room is 24 feet? By all means plenty of room for 7.1.4! Do it and don't look back. You will ALWAYS wonder what it COULD be if don't. Don't put yourself in that position. Makes it easy to sell as well.

get some wireless headphones and call it a day.  if I had known that my wife would freak out every time a loud part of a movie comes on, I would never have installed anything in the living room.

Is there a way to take advantage of Atmos without having floor-standing speakers surrounding the couch? Without a dedicated theater, it looks hideous to 99% of my clientele.

maybe im not up to date on Atmos speaker placement (havent done one) in the 5.1.2 setup it would be 5.1 normal setup with 2 speakers between the couch and TV area?

I have a Marantz 7701 Preamp that got pulled out of a job that I was going to use, I dont think this is even atmos though...so maybe just do 7.1?

Same. When i met my gf 16 years ago i had a sony HTIB and a 4:3 projector in my apartment. The first time we watched a movie together she kept telling me to turn it down. I should have ended it right there.

If I am watching a movie where the dialog is quiet, then i don't turn it down immediately when it gets loud during an action scene, I get yelled at to turn it down.  i swear it is like being 12 years old again and mom banging on the ceiling telling me to turn down that Milli Vanilli album.

If you get treated like a 12 year old, act like one. Post the same signs you did then: No girls allowed! lol (only during movie watching, of course! ) :)

Night mode or dynamic range compression are your friends!

That IS a problem for you, and it very likely influences your enthusiasm about the work you do! It's hard to sell steaks and barbecues if your wife is a vegetarian.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Put you a 46" Vizio on a stand, set a cable box under it and call it done. You don't need all that fancy crap.
