I don't work in the industry anymore and I just gave my MX 980/MRF-350 to my parents and replaced it with the SimpleControl iPhone app with the Simple Blaster. It works great and even had the codes for my electric screen. Frankly I use my Apple TV remote for almost everything. There is a place for these devices. Yep at your grandma's house ;>0

I never said I would install one for a customer. A physical remote is always a better option than a touch screen IMO. I never thought I would be using my phone to control my system. I just don't have the need for anything more complex at the moment. In the future I may and I will get a real control system again. My point was that, at least in the case of SimpleControl, these systems can work quite well.

How about just adding 4-6 IR emitter ports that are simply tied to the blaster? Maybe a customize-able UI instead of a screen full of text based buttons... With a few tweaks, this could be halfway decent.

When I worked at Chrysler there was a large churn of process engineers. Each successive engineer would come up with some grand idea of how to improve a job/group of jobs on the assembly line.
It didn't matter how logical that "lowly" line guy's (who had been installing said part 800 times per day for twenty years making him the worlds foremost expert on installing said part) argument against was. or how many previous engineers had the same "original" concept, forced implementation of it, wasted time and money.
No, the engineers idea was somehow magically better.
I never met a process engineer there that could accept the fact that their idea was not novel.
