OK Pros, this is a new one for me. Maybe one have you have run into this?

I have a client with the Denon E400 controlled by the MX-900. The clients are older and when they watch/listen to the STB source, they want multi channel stereo so they can hear it better through the surround speaks. It seems every time I go there the sound setting has changed for that source. It's seems to default to Dolby Digital of some sort which drops volume from the rears.

So, on the OEM Denon remote, when you push and hold the green button (movie surround) it pops up a drop down menu on the GUI with multi channel stereo as an option. I believe it's the 4th from the top.

My first question is how would you capture a press and hold button FROM an OEM remote on the MX-900? Learn maybe?

Second, does anyone know if that drop down menu has an anchor? Even if I can over come the press and hold issue, how can I make sure the macro will end up on multi channel stereo?

Programming with CCP

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have to offer.

Lastly, I love this site (Thanks Daniel) even with some of the arguments and crazy talk. I learn a lot while being entertained....lol...With that said, what ever you observe this time of year, I hope it's a good one, year after year.

I'm pretty sure there's a discrete 5 channel IR command available. I know I've given the user the option on some of the older models.

Malcolm -

There is a IR command but I could not get it to work with CCP. I tested several of them and could not force it to change. The only way I was able to change it is with the push and hold on the OEM remote.

I must be missing something easy.

I think you might be missing something easy, or maybe it Is time for a new remote with a little more real estate.

What I did the other day on a Pro Control and (current) Denon setup is add two buttons. One button labeled "All Speakers" which does "Mode Multi-Chan Stereo". Another button labeled "Movie Sound" which does "Mode PL2 Cinema". Then I just copied those buttons to each source. A couple months ago I used the "Mode Scroll" for a button to scroll through each surround mode on a Marantz.

I understand it's slightly different, but I'm sure if you dig through a few more codesets, I bet you can make it work.

You should just create a hidden page on the main menu with those commands with a navigate- button. Then just have a button on each source labeled sound modes with a jump to the hidden page. Much quicker to program.

Edit: sorry, just realized you are using PC. Not sure if possible or not with their software.

Yeah, I suppose I could do that too.

Whatever it takes to avoid the "I can't hear my back speakers" call. :)

I've gotten my fair share of those, which is funny because every surround sound system I have installed, I explain the fact that the rear speakers are effect speakers and explain what that means/entails. I do program my control system to set the sound mode for TV sources so it is set to surround sound. I also set music sources to have an all channel stereo sound mode. I use Yamaha AVRs and it is easy. Any codes missing are available on the CI site.

Maybe this can be tackled another way. Can you set the Cable Box to output stereo or something non Dolby Digital? Maybe even use analogue out? Clearly they don't care about digital surround sound.

There should be an option in the menu to switch off "Auto Surround", this may also help.

This is a recurrent theme with me and I can't break my habit of initially setting the system up for proper "surround", then fielding the complaint: "The rear speakers aren't working." I sigh to myself, then adjust the system to "smack the back of the head mode." Years ago I had a similar discussion with an air conditioning installer who always set his systems to make ice cubes on day one.

That's a great idea Craig, one I should have thought of. I'll just output L/R analog. Problem solved. I did explain to the clients that BD's and DVD's in general should be watched in true Dolby surround. So I can leave the BD player connected as I have it. I love working with older clients but they sure ask for strangest things.

Last question, is there a way to capture a press and hold FROM an OEM remote to any URC remote?

If you use the AUDIO 811 code set, the discretes for 5channel et have worked fine for me. The 811 code set is from the older Denon models.

For some reason URC's database for the new AV receivers don't have good codes for discrete control of the commands like 5 channel stereo via IR

That's +4 dB in my experience. And yes, it's after giving the explanation. I LOVE IT when someone asks about the rear speakers when they're listening to a news broadcast or a narrated documentary.

Does anybody have a favorite scene from a recent movie that has screaming surround? My faves in the past have been the Harrier scene from "True Lies," a scene cut in "Far and Away" that goes from a dark tenement to open skies on the prairie, and even the beginning scene of "Always."

Years ago I had a similar discussion with an air conditioning installer who always set his systems to make ice cubes on day one.

Nice. Typical.

People. Whaddaya gonna do?
