Merry Christmas Matt, and a happy and prosperous new year! Maybe someone can edit out the part that doesn't pertain to you!

Hey M, I was told you're the Denon guru. Not sure about protocol for direct questions to other members, this was just your last post - so I burgularized it. Question is:

Can I use an IR extender cable with receiver on one end and 3.5mm jack on the other (receiver cable only, not the kits with module and emmitter) plugged directly into the "IR In" into the back of my Denon x3300 to control the unit located on the other side of the wall?

(trying to avoid the seperate emitters/extra components of the kits) Recommendations?

If not, what is the "IR in" port for?

Yes, I'm new to this.

Thanks
Denon AVR-X3300W

It connects to the IR output on the connecting block, which that receiver you talked about plugs into as well. You need the kit. Why? People rarely want repeat IR for just one device. The receiver collects the IR signal, the connecting block repeats, then either flashers, or mono 3.5mm cables send it down stream to components.

You can probably get the whole kit for just about the same price as the receiver alone.

To have a little more detail: the 'connecting block' has the wires routed to where they need to go to make the system work - power supply to energize the IR receiver (or else it ain't going to work), resistors to bias the IR emitters on the output (without which your IR signal would be to hot for most IR emitters and direct IR inputs on equipment - like the Denon's IR input).

So if you are using an IR receiver, to repeat the IR commands from a remote to equipment - then you have to have the kit. Without all the proper pieces (in your case, at least the connecting block, power supply, and 3.5mm mono cable), it isn't going to work.

The IR receiver itself can't do anything without power, that is why it is a 3.5mm 3 pin plug (IR signal, Ground, and +12V). The IR input on equipment is a 3.5mm 2 pin jack (IR signal, Ground).

Also note: Some cheap IR receivers are +5V instead of +12v. Need to pay attention to that when sourcing parts.

Oh and after mucking around with every cheapo IR kit I could find in hopes of saving money, like many others I've settled on Xantec and nothing else. Which is funny because it's the first brand I started with. It's the only brand I've found that realiably works all the time. Classic case of you don't get what you don't pay for.

As has already been mentioned, you can't do it because the Denon is expecting a 2-conductor 'Tip-Sleeve or TS" connection which will not supply power to the IR receiver. IR receivers require 12VDC, which is why they are almost always part of a system that includes a connecting block and power supply, which then could connect to the Denon with a mono mini IR cable.

Bingo.
Bravo!
Exactly!

I haven't checked lately, but Xantech instructional materials state (used to, anyway) how much current each part requires, meaning you could make a complicated system using only one power supply. Last time I was asked to use multiple Niles devices, for instance, to control TEN DirecTV boxes, the factory data did not include any amperage information. The techs at the factory didn't have any info. They expected us to use a 1-ampere supply for each IR receiver/emitter combo. I did the research and found that FIVE receiver/emitter combos could safely and conservatively be powered by one supply.

Most importantly, don't even think of mixing brands of IR stuff. That's a good way for something not to work and for you to have no idea why.

Did the Kars10 miss this information? Is it in the manual? If not, why the hell not?

EDIT: The Infrared Sensor is mentioned on P 64 of the manual, with ZERO details beyond "sold separately." There's more stuff in that drawing also without model numbers and with no explanation in the text. Those Denon guys should read my signature! END EDIT.

For that matter, is the Denon input expecting an IR sensor output (high current) or an IR LED signal (Sensor output plus current limiting resistor)?

Kars10, you can always start a new thread. You don't have to piggy-back onto an old thread about a different subject. As you can see, many people will jump in to help.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Hola muchachos,

I figured I would dust off an old thread with some warm wishes and holiday cheer. All the best to you and yours here on RC this Holiday Season and into the New Year.
