So my client texted me that their wifi does not work. It went out after ADT left. I jumped on my cloud controller and sure enough, the access point is not online. I checked OVRC and i do have access, so network is ok.
So i told client i cannot come until Friday afternoon, I'm booked. A few minutes ago, she figured out what the ADT guy did. He used our wires, and removed our access point to install his smoke detector. The house now has no internet and no tv, being we have Total Control in the house, so wifi remotes are pretty useless now. I am beyond pissed that a "tech" would go into a house and remove equipment that is connected and powered on (the thing has a big blue ring of light on it, kinda hard to miss). This dude has NO business being in the industry.

On top of that the liability of using a Cat5 for a fire alarm.
Unbelievable. Who the eff even if your a hack thinks that's ok. You cannot assume that a effing AP is a fire alarm. He probably thought he was doing them a favor.

How did the home owner figure this out? I mean, it's such an extreme thing for even the biggest moron to do. Seems like it would have been easier for him to use a wireless smoke. I think I would try to go make sure that's what really happened before raising hell.

He probably thought he was doing them a favor. he would have also had to go to the head end and find the wire connected to the switch or POE injector. That requires unhooking each wire looking for a tone. I don't see how someone would confuse that for an old smoke.

Ran through a patch panel So not only did he have to unhook the patch cables at the patch panel to find the wire, he had to screw with a patch panel, that's clearly not his equipment. This guy may be a new level of stupid.

This used to be mounted on the ceiling It now sits on a granite countertop This is now on the ceiling in the exact same spot where the access point used to reside. Pretty clear what happened here

This might be the craziest thing i have seen. I have had people run their pipe or cable through holes i drilled. I have had people use my keypad/touchpanel boxes to mount their security keypads. I have even had people use my wires. But i have never ever had anyone uninstall my device and use my cable for their device. Bill for that service call and encourage the client to have ADT reimburse her. Maybe keep the smoke detector and tell the ADT tech that if he wants it...he has to come and get it.

Glad you have some pictures, assuming the client took them. So when you go there, take pictures of the patch panel, where that cable now goes and where it suppose to go and all that jazz.
When repaired, take all the pictures over again. So the client can make their argument to ADT.

KOT I'm not touching anything until ADT has a supervisor meet me on site.

This might be the craziest thing i have seen. I have had people run their pipe or cable through holes i drilled. We wired up the third or fourth incarnation of a combo brewery/bar/restaurant in Hermosa Beach. One day I cut holes to make about a sixty foot path for speaker wires. I came back the next day and found the CO2 line had been installed in my wire path. Nope. I located approximately the center of this one piece of tubing and cut it, pulling it out and putting my speaker wire in. I vehemently oppose people using equipment or even drilled holes that they did not make! Maybe keep the smoke detector and tell the ADT tech that if he wants it...he has to come and get it. That should be just part of the prep for the showdown. On December 22, 2016 at 00:30, goldenzrule said...

Maybe he doesn't need to be fired, but he sure as hell needs to know to leave alone what he himself does not install!

Years ago we connected a DirecTV receiver to a telephone cable that was ran for us. At that time DirecTV required when activating receivers to do a phone check on each receiver. When we did the phone check the fire alarm went off. Next thing you know there is three or four giant fire trucks outside with their sirens blaring.
Turns out the guy that installed the smoke detector spliced into the phone line instead of running his own cable.
Stupid is as stupid does.
