Customer with newer Samsung LED TV, Sony BD, Amazon Fire stick, U-Verse for TV and AppleTV bought a new Onkyo AVR because the old one died, then called to say that the Cable box shows video, but the BD player and AppleTV don't.

I checked the AVR settings and did a firmware update, nothing changed- I'll do a reset if needed. Restarted the ATV and got that working, but the BD still doesn't, even though I rebooted it and tried using the ATV cable (since it sits on the BD player) through the AVR, but no dice. I tried a different HDMI port and had the same results. When I start the BD player, I see the BD logo, but it goes dark after a few seconds. I unplugged the TV power cord and the HDMI, with no improvement.

I didn't have time to reconnect the BD directly to the TV so I could set the BD player's resolution to 720p, but I can do that since I need to go back and do some programming for the remote.

The two things I'll try next are:
-hard reset for the AVR
-drop the BD payer's resolution
-use a different HDMI from the AVR to the TV

I didn't see a reset button for the BD player. Has anyone seen this with Onkyo, or have they resolved their problems?

I'll take another BD player to sub for the Sony, just in case.

Did I ever mention that I hate HDMI?

In the Sony Blu-ray, turn off the deep color setting. That has fixed all of those symptoms for me with Sony Blu-ray and Onkyo products.

The Onkyo/Integra hdmi issue was fixed years ago, as where many other manufacturers that used that same TI chipset). If yours is a new Onkyo, thats not the issue.

(keep in mind that when Integra was first replacing defective units that had HDMI issue, they were not aware that it was a bad TI chipset causing the problem, thus sent out units with the SAME chipset. Thus, ALL of the first one we replaced in the field, we are now replacing them again for the same exact faulty chipset. Of course, the figured this out a few weeks/months after they first started replacing units)

I'll try that- I doubt it will be noticeable with their kids' discs; not sure which Sony BD player, but I don't remember seeing anything for Deep Color.

It's an Onkyo TX-NR555. Supposed to be able to do all of the new stuff, but....

Listen to Tom. The deep color setting is there and it has been known to cause issues sometimes with certain equipment.
While you are in there turning deep color off, put the color setting to YPbPr 4:4:4 as well. Also look at the resolution, default is 'auto', change that to 1080p fixed.
One last thing, turn HDMI CEC off on the Sony BD.
All of this "is" in the menu.

WHAT HE SAID!!!!!!!!!

Until UHD/BD players, there was no deep color. TURN IT OFF!

Also, general info for UHD/BD Players.
Samsung: OK Device, Outputs 12 Bit Color, PIA to Setup
XBox 1S: Slightly better than OK device, Outputs 10 Bit Color, Best Setup to date
Panasonic: Slightly better than Samsung overall
Phillips: Meh.

Solved-

I should have turned off Deep Color by itself in the beginning, but I decided to get in and out as quickly as possible, so I turned that and the CEC off (which I could swear I DID turn off the first time) and set resolution to 1080p, which I usually do, anyway. I never leave CEC on, but I needed to look further into the menu for the Deep Color settings. I have a small LCD TV that I use for troubleshooting and setting up equipment, so I took that with me and I had video from the AVR via my own cable, so I also looked at the TV's menu again- I made sure to turn off CEC last time, but there it was, On. Again. I even had video at the TV end of the HDMI cable, which was the first thing I checked for today.

I didn't install the BD player or the AVR- I installed the old equipment, but the customer replaced these two. Then, I got to re-program the remote.

I try to set sources to the best/basic settings and let the TV do more of the processing, using the AVR as more of a switch/audio processor than anything else.

Thanks, all.
