Taking over a project. This receiver, DirecTV, Apple TV, Integra blu-ray, LG TV.

Many times on startup, HDMI does not seem to handshake, and the Yamaha splash screen is all that displays. Client reports that it may take 5-6 tries before you see TV. No sound either. Have asked her to try AppleTV or blu-ray next time it acts up.

When I got there, the original installer must have had issues, because a Snap 5x1 switcher was in there. I took it out and got decent switching. It appears that this may have been the problem all along.

My prime suspect is a very generic looking, apx 30-40 HDMI cable from AVR to TV. I want to go back and put a decent one in for test, but waiting to hear from client.

Are there any HDMI issues with this receiver? Any input gratefully accepted.

Liekly a bad AVR. I had a 2040 do the same thing. Sometimes client would get audio after like 30 or 40 minutes. Yamaha ended up replacing it with a 2060 after a TERRIBLE experience with United Radio, which they had me ship the unit to. It's the one and only Yamaha AVR I have had go bad (other than a couple gnarly lightening strikes.)

If you're seeing the Yamaha "splash" screen, I don't think it's a receiver issue. I would check for latest firmware and check HDMI cables. Also, check to see if the receiver is changing to the correct input.

We use a lot of Yamaha and aren't having HDMI issues.

I did have one receiver freak out when updated over WiFi. I don't know if the WiFi was to blame but it was unrecoverable. I stick to hard-wired updates now.

Not necessarily the case. The bad unit I mentioned above had video most of the time, but no audio. Sometimes, video would not pass but we did get the piano splash screen. That unit also had a bad nic card. United Radio never fixed any of the issues despite having it for 3 months.

I have had my share of pain.
Similar equipment, yet different!
Samsung, Yamaha, apple, Cisco TWC STB

We basically replaced everything except the customer.

Brent suggested we use this

Because the only fix was pulling the HDMI cable from the TV.

That little magic box does basically that.

Oh yes it can. As Golden said, this very much could be a Yamaha issue. The Yamaha splash screen is generated post everything else in the HDMI circuit - so actually, it would have to be completely dead to not even get a splash screen.

To add to this: I have seen 3 Yamaha receivers do this exact thing. 2 of those were the 40 series.

The standard approach I recommend is:
Go into the Advanced Menu and reset the Video processing
Check firmware - update via USB (trusting a customers network is just asking for trouble).
Check another source (or two).
Swap one cable at a time, starting with those easiest to access...
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

i have this happen often... although i think its a handshake issue (EDID) issue w source, hdmi cable, display.

can you narrow it down to which source it happens on? on startup when? with DTV?

i personally have an issue 2-3 times a week at my own house w my comcast older stb box. blu ray, and my cameras, and apple all work and switch fine. its always 100% of the time the cable box....

lots of times i have to keep display on and resend macro and it fixes. sometimes unplug hdmi, and sometimes shut box off and turn on... all these do fix the issue so its definitely dedicated to the cable box....

if its multiple sources thren its from recvr to hdmi to display edid...

throw a 1x2 hdmi switch or splitter in there for clock stretching. learned that from brent, works for us sometimes

I would push the resolution down on the sources to test to see if it is a cable bandwidth issue, and given it is a 2 generations old Yamaha any newer sources may not like the Yamaha's firmware...my .02

I never said it couldn't. I shared my opinion from real world experience. It's pointless to post on here. I just let you guys yell at Ernie.

Relax bro. No one said anything bad here. Just stating the facts of what could be the issue. This is all just Internet troubleshooting
