If you need the spray paint to feel dry immediately, spray an automotive clear coat over the base paint...

I use this all the time, works great, the "tackyness" of the spray paint will be gone in munutes. [Link: touchupdirect.com]

I've tried the goof off/goo gone stuff... The spray way worked much better. The rubbery goo was melted in minutes.

My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

This not URC only problem, many UEI made remotes with satin backs turn to gooey, this include the Kameleons, Producer 8's, and HT-pro(urc-9910).

google sticky remote and you will find this is a fairly common problem. It seems some had success with 70% isopropyl alcohol. But, it also looks like in some cases the rubber texture/satin finish is a coating and the alcohol may remove it too.

All this reminds me of Tributaries speaker wire.

I did a take over that was wired with that stuff, and I had to wear gloves, it was such a slime covered nasty mess.

Luckily none of my URC remotes have this problem.

Just last week a new customer pulls out an old Harmony remote which was all nasty sticky like that - she wanted to know if we could make it work again. Told her best thing to do was throw it away.
I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's AV trouble, a man alone.

I've recently had to paint a flexible wire management product ([Link: officedepot.com]) made of soft PVC and it took at least four days for the paint to stop being sticky. This seems to be the case any time I paint something made of plastic.

I use Rustoleum spray paint; I don't know what particular variety, if there are varieties of it. What did you use?

Whatever the cause, these different cleaning methods have REALLY helped. I'm going to give GooGone a try first.

Thanks for all the help, guys! With all these examples and ready information, I'm a bit amazed that nobody has brought this up for almost ten years!

I only use Rustoleum if I have enough time to let it dry- some of theirs do take days and I prefer Krylon, for plastic.

GoofOff is similar to GooGone so you can substitute it. Some of the Orange-based cleaners may work, too.

Just curious as to your locations.
I lived in Southern California most of my life, never a problem with my remotes. Moved to Kentucky where humidity runs rampant, my remotes goed up in a matter of months, cleaned them, they goed back up.
Moved back to Southern California, cleaned them, never a problem again.

I'm in CT and never had an issue. We get our fair share of humidity here, just not year round.

Here's info on why. Don't pour a bourbon until after reading.

Yeah, the problem with URC seems dependant on the exact paint they were using - not even the color, but the specific batch.

I have old, daily used MX-800's and MX-850's that are still perfectly fine. But, I also had a MX-700 that got **horrible**. I still have the top (beige) half of the case, and it feels like someone painted it with rubber cement that's still drying. URC sent me a replacement case, and that one, even though the same colors, has been fine. Probably different paint supplier.

I have drawers of other URC/UEI remotes with tactile paint that are still fine.
