Saving it as a scene is possible - but then it means every time you use that source (say USB) it will default to that video source... which is obviously not always ideal.

As I recollect, using an input as part of a scene does not force the receiver into that scene when that discrete input command is used by itself, only when the particular Scene command is used. Even then, though, if this is important enough to give up one out of the four Scenes on most Yamahas, you should be able to have a Scene with the video and audio you want, then another Scene with the normal USB input and no video input.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Yamaha can't do it.. Denon can kind of do it but in a funky way. You have to select your audio source first then do a "video" select. If at any time you change audio sources you have to reselect your video.

I read this in the Denon manuals. It just allows Phono and CD for analog sources. But, it won't allow the CD if, according to the manual: "This cannot be set when any of the HDMI, component video or video connectors are assigned."

I guess that means that if you assigned a HDMI input to CD, then this feature won't work. ??

For music sources, the customer has a turntable, a Sonos Connect, a CD changer and an second analog cable with a headphone jack to connect any smartphone for music. So, I have several sources, but only 2 possible inputs, it looks like.

Just to follow up.....I ended up using a Denon AVR-X4300H. It has a "video select" feature that allows you to display video from any source, while you play audio from the CD input, Tuner, Bluetooth, or Phono input. I just have it set up so when he goes to play the Turntable, for example, the video from the Directv box is displayed, automatically. I also just put the TV power buttons on the remote screen so if he wants, he can just turn the TV off while listening to music.

It's a pretty nice receiver, but the AVR-4806 I put in its place was an absolute tank! They sure don't build them like that, anymore.

As an aside, I set up my Yamaha pre to run a TV source everytime I use Pandora, Spotify, internet radio or Bluetooth.
I'm running a Harmony Ultimate so I have an activity for both 'Spotify with TV' and 'Spotify only' etc. It works exactly how it should, so I'm happy.
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.
