What did the guy say was the reason he didn't put a lag in the stud? Did he say the box was in the way even though he had 4 togglers in the wall? I like how his defense was that the drywall was installed wrong because there wasn't a screw in the piece that broke.

He didn't put a lag in the stud because he never looked for a stud. He gave that ridiculous answer while looking at the photos in court. The TV was just mounted somewhere on the wall. It's not like it was centered on cabinetry or a center channel speaker. Its a bedroom with plastic bins for clothing so i would wager the homeowner would have been fine with the TV mounted a couple of inches over. Moving it to the left of the work box (where the work box wouldn't be in his way) would have allowed them to lag to the stud.

He called the sheetrock "very cheap" lol. He worked as a QC specialist at a sheetrock plant in a former life :).

Finally watched it this evening.

The best line was "I've installed probably 3000 to 3700 TV's.".

But he left off "and only 2000 of them fell off the wall.".... LOL

Those damn Sanus instructions kinda kicked his ass. It's always those damn instructions...

I suppose you wouldn't have the link, would you? Can't seem to find it on YT unless I'm not using the proper search terms. Or either because I'm not in Australia.

Bolt mount to backplate, see 2x4s present as requested. Put weight on mount to test, all good. Hang display, pull display away from wall to cable.

If I follow you correctly, you hung weight on the mount, but you did not hang the weight on the mount with it pulled all the way out.

The further the weight is from the wall, the higher is the pullout force. With the mount and the TV right next to the wall, the force is almost only downward. This might have been the reason you went on to the next step!

As the professional it was up to the installer to say... The TV will need to be mounted 2 inches to the left so that the mount can be attached to the stud.

This is totally unnecessary in most cases. If the TV cannot be slid a bit to the right to compensate for the backplate being on the left, then a hole can be drilled in the backplate right where the stud is so you can hit a stud.

Lets be real here...those guys didn't even look for a stud.

I'm sure that's true. It would have been SO EASY to find that stud and mount to it!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

This depends entirely on the mount being used. Some can be drilled out, some cannot. If you cannot drill it to allow for mounting to a stud, then it is your responsibility to inform the client the TV has to be moved over. I give my clients the option of us opening the wall to add more support, but let them know we do not do the patch/paintwork. So far, have never had one choose the second option.

Was that Paul Teutul Sr in the back row?

Whoa, she took a classic faceplate in the next case. Some have said it's because of the high heels she wear... well I beg to differ, because I haven't seen her wear high heels.

Just watched it. The client seems like a pita client, but the installer looks like someone I wouldn't let on my property. What a nut case. It is very clear the guy doesn't know wtf he is talking about. Surprised anyone would hire him. Love how he has an old tube TV as his logo too :-)

Had the dummy slid the mount just slightly to the side, two of the holes would land on the stud, and the other two could use togglers.

In that case it's doubtful there would ever have been a problem, and the TV itself would be able to be centered since almost every cantilever mount allows for some side to side unless not extended (wouldn't need a cantilever in that case).

I would like to point out, that he probably brought his entire crew with him. I'm sure the People's Court is recorded during the week day of M to F. So I wonder why he had time for at least 4 to 6 hours for those guys to travel to the studio, get make up, appear and travel back home.

So he probably lost double. Paid the plaintive and his employees.

I know, this shows actually take care of the court cost and the fees. But still.

On a side note....Does anybody else think that Judge Whatever her name is, is kinda hot?  Or am I just getting that old?

I think that he said that the cost of mounting was $210 per TV with the mount included. The old saying that you get what you pay for applies here. You want someone who will put up a cheap single stud articulating mount for a cheap price and not install it properly then you are getting exactly what you are paying for.
If you are going to do the job...why not do it the right way?

TMZ has photos of her at a European beach.
