I had a customer call me yesterday and told me that something was wrong with her sound system, it sounded like the dialogue was muted.

Receiver is Denon AVR-3803, speakers are M&K SW-52's, all around.

I went out there and found that only the tweeters are working on the center channel, and both surrounds. I ran a test tone, and you could hear it right away. I tried analog inputs, digital inputs, different DSP settings, Pro Logic, DTS, etc... The left and right channels are fine.

It doesn't matter what input or source. I even tried a different receiver, but same results.

My thought is that the crossovers are smoked in the speakers. If so, what could have caused it to happen in three speakers at once?

I have the receiver hooked up at my house right now, sounds fine...

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Do those speakers have two sets of binding posts for biamping/biwiring? If so, ensure that the high frequency and low frequency posts are strapped together still, otherwise only half of the speaker could work.

Crossover failure is quite rare. More likely the woofers are toast, or there is a biamp connection that is disconnected.

This particular series doesn't have any bi-Wiring/amping connections, or any crossover bypass.

I spoke with M & K, and almost the first words out of the guy's mouth were that I neede to replace the drivers.

I'm sending them in for repair, they promised a week turnaround. The customer's house is about 80 miles round trip, so I didn't want to have to go out there and put in the drivers and that not be the fix.

Thanks for your help...

M+K have had driver problems for a while. I had to replace 2 sets in the same subwoofer. Do the drivers have the M+K logo on them. The ones that are all black were sourced from a different manufacturer than normal and had a VERY high rate of failure. Good luck.

We do a lot of commercial work such as Bars and Nightclubs. The symptoms that you have described happens to us all the time. I am afraid, the low end drivers are gone.
