equipment:
Yamaha RX-A820
Mitsubishi HC7800
Xfinity DVR XG2V2-P

DVR connected to receiver with HDMI, and HDMI monitor out to projector.

The cable box goes through it's boot up sequence, then powers down and starts over. Never fully starting up.
If I turn off the projector, it will start up and i have sound through the receiver. As soon as i turn on the projector, it reboots and continues rebooting.
If i go directly to the projector with the HDMI and optical to the receiver it works.
the system worked fine for years with a Motorola cable box.
I did a firmware update on the receiver, but still same problem.

There's also a blu ray and Apple TV connected. They both still work.

Any thoughts on why this is happening, and how do i fix it?
the customer is willing to get his old cable box back, but i would still like to figure out a fix for the issue.

I have another customer with the same issue. He also has a Yamaha receiver and Mitsubishi projector. Different models, but same brands.

TIA
Mike

I have had similar issues with my own Xfinity DVR and client boxes running through Yamaha AVRs.

I get a blue screen on the TV about 25% of the time I power up. I can generally fix this by manually turning the DVR on and off (manually since there is no power off on the Xfinity remote). If this doesn't work, I have to remove the HDMI cable from the DVR and replace it.

I believe that this is an HDMI handshake issue, but cannot prove it. The strangest part of this is that all of my Xfinity boxes worked fine on their respective Yamaha AVRs until about 6 months ago. I suspect some kind of Comcast firmware update, but again, I cannot prove it.

One of my client boxes failing to connect about 99% of the time, so I added a cheap HMDI 1x2 splitter between the client box and the AVR. Per several sources, these splitters will often strip out the handshake. This fixed the problem immediately.

I have not tried this on my main DVR box because it works about 75% of the time and when it doesn't work, the fix is easy (and I am cheap).

Not sure if this is the same issue causing your problems, but I would try adding a splitter. Here is what I used:

Good luck!

Can you force the Xfinity box to put out only 1080i so it won't have to auto detect? Or whatever you want it set at? It's a shot in the dark though.

I tried video processing on the receiver at 720p, 1080i and 1080p, but i have not tried changing the cable box.

With the box connecting properly, it works 0% of the time. power cycling manually and unplugging- replugging HDMI cable doesnt help.

I'm not going back until I have a few options to fix it. I'll bring a splitter with me next time and try that.

I did notice that when i was holding the HDMI end coming from the box and touching the Monitor out HDMI end with my other hand, there was noticeable voltage. I did it by accident and it was shocking.
Maybe there's a voltage issue with the new Xfinity boxes?

Did you try different HDMI, cables?
Does the client have an other xFinity box of the same type? Or do they have a slave box with this system? If so, swap the two boxes to see if it would work that way.

I tried a new HDMI between the cable box and receiver, but not between receiver and projector.

Both customers have the main DVR with the system. i could try moving the main DVR to a different room and use the small slave boxes with the system. i don't think there's any reason the main box can't be moved.

A couple things. Make sure there is a good ground on the cable service coming into the house, I have seen that cause weird issues. Also try a HDMI reconditioner, like the Key Digital FIX-22. I had a customer with a Canadian satellite receiver and it had a similar issue, but it would work for about 5 minutes then the sat receiver would completely lock up. I put in the FIX-22 and it has been clear sailing ever since. The customer got several sat receivers and they all did the same thing, not a defective box but some incompatibility between the receiver and the balun.

Good luck.
