Most TV's optical outputs are fixed, right? That's been my experience.

If one needed an amplifier to drive an outboard pair of ceiling speakers, other than an AVR, what are you guys using?

It would need to have IR control, even better the ability to lean IR (like most soundbars).

I know that new B&K (shudder) amp has all of these attributes. Any other models that you guys like? Snap?

I have a Yamaha MusicCast amp on my tv with an old pair of energy speakers and an 8" sub. I like it. Adds a lot more to the table than just power and IR. Airplay, streaming apps, analog and digital inputs, bluetooth (just hooked up an Amazon Echo Dot to it via BT).

Snap one works well. It's not going to win any awards for SQ but paired with some efficient full range speakers and better yet, a subwoofer, it is a million times better than tv speakers. Highly flexible with some input selection and lots of control options.

I Haven't used it, but looks versatile. I'm sure Fred would vouch.
