It is not against the law but it will lock you down to 480P only very soon.

That we know, but Ernie didnt mention a resolution lock, but rather use of the cable literally being against the law to use. For someone that is a stickler for facts, he sure screwed the pooch on that one.

I had a Samsung 75 show the "use component" message with a 4k client. It turned out to be the 4k cdmi cable, swapped in a new one and it's working fine

Something similar: I had a very basic Apple TV three attached to a Samsung TV. It worked for a month or two, and then especially with Netflix it started to show HDCP error messages. I had the customer reboot the TV and the AppleTV multiple times and make sure the cable was snug. It was a binary 1 m cable. Finally I swapped out the cable for a new one and suddenly it all worked and has worked ever since at least two years now. The cable wasn't tweaked or damaged or anything like that. WTF

I made it back to the client's today to troubleshoot the C61K 4K client / 4K SONY XBR-55X850D TV pic problem. Picture came up mostly magenta and toggled to full field static and back every few seconds. DTV menu (seen through magenta) would not allow selection of any output resolutions ("All are unsupported"). Eventually the "Use Component Cable Message" returned.

Visual Inspection of HDMI Cable Installation=Good--No damage or Snags
Pin tested the HDMI Cable=Good
1080p Pattern Generator to TV input=Good
1080p Pattern through installed 2M cable=Good
DTV Client through NEW Ethereal 2M MHY HDMI=BAD
DTV Client through NEW HDMI to alternate TV Input=Bad
Call BrentM at Ethereal=Solution

According to Brent, the C61K 4K Genie Clients are overheating in 4K output mode when not well ventilated and causing solder trace problems and or trace damage on multilayer boards (a la XBOX360 Red Ring of Death).

Brent suggested letting the unit cool for 10 mins or so and try again but warned that it was almost certainly damaged to some extent already...Normal picture once cooled, though still failed to allow selection of 4K output resolution and was otherwise "wonky" in the resolution selection menu. Learned that users were purposefully leaving client on, even when lift cabinet top was closed and sealed [I think due to client/TV Power synch issues]...

Called Awesome Independent Sat Installer to replace 4K client with 1080 variant since cabinet cannot be aggressively cooled with any reasonable ease.

Moral of the story: Ventilate those 4K Clients or avoid them!

Brent as usual is correct, however for everyone else's future troubleshooting issues.

The issue may still be with the cable. You notated its an MHY cable, which if I recall (and based on a quick google search) is a 'thin line' shallow head cable design which have bandwidth issues...on a similar note, none of the 'thin line' type cables should be used going forward for anything 4k and/or runs greater than 6ft as they have current drop and termination issues that often cause problems (as well as easily broken conductors which may or may not be visibly damaged).

I'd be interested to hear BrentM's feedback on this. The Metra site states two different things in regards to data rate capability on the same product page for the MHY-SHDME2. In one place it states 4K w/up to 10.2 Gbps data rate, the other it states 18.2 Gbps data rate. I tend to believe the prior spec, but either way, these are DPL Labs Certified "4K Rated" cables at the 2M length, no...?

Swap a known-good new HDMI 4K compliant cable temporarily, or use your 4k HDMI test pattern generator (ha ha). I keep several extra DTV receivers around for testing/loaner/rentals. They're CHEAP on ebay, swap the client's card in, call DTV to activate. Also, muffin fans are $10.00. Buy a 24VDC and run it at 12V, or a 220VAC and run it at 110VAC. It's MUCH quieter. Your clients deserve better. SELL it to them. If it's the TV, try several inputs, if they all support 4K. If it's broken and less than a year old, have a repair person swap the main bd. under warranty.

There was a lot of concern within the technical staff here at MHTG about that issue with thin cables (lets face as a rule more copper is better for 4K). But after extensive testing by DPL we have no worries with the MHY "Thin" series cables. They all passed the DPL standards and as in the past we send samples from every incoming shipment to them to re-verify.

Brian:
This is a DPL 18 certified cable, I will have the web portal checked, thank you.

Brent,
Thanks for the response and confirmation of the DPL tests.

I did run into issues in the field with them (and Pro-connect's) thin line when they were first released (and convinced to give them a try) and read somewhere else early on when troubleshooting that thin cabes were prone to issues related to bandwidth over length...we only use Key Digital champion for under 30ft and Ethereal's for 30/40 then Extenders over that (we average 50-100+ installed per month)...and haven't had a single issue in the last 4 years.

I get that message from an old ass receiver, and only on my projector when I go to certain movie channels.

DTV is a hunk of garbage.

I've been getting HDCP error messages with DTV HR44,HR24, and HR21. I've swapped out TVs, HDMIs, DTV boxes to no avail. I've spoken with a higher up at DTV and he told me they're rolling more frequent updates which contain more HDCP updates causing us a bunch of headaches. I've put the Key Digital KD-HDFIX22 to resolve most of the issues out there.
