It seems totally possible to not have hooked one up, yet still make some money.

No, it really doesn't. Given the number of ATV's sold, with four different generations, at this point to have never installed one is not very different than someone saying they are in this busAimee's and have never installed an AVR.

On the same day as this thread was started, you also stated you were installing a fire tv for the first time. How about Roku? Have you installed any streaming devices before this?

Actually, no. I don't always work alone, and I don't always do everything.

...Or whatever a new one today might be called. Especially in light of the fact that I'm installing an Apple TV Model A 1625 ...I was referred to this client by a guy who works with my son. The guy works in IT, so network issues are his. ...He's going to supply a Fire Stick or whatever it is. My part of things, etc etc

and then I discuss the things I will install, all of them NOT a fire stick.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Until now, clients have not wanted them...

I have a really hard time believing that. You may not have known enough to ask, but our customers are using streaming media, and a HUGE percentage are already in the Apple eco-system. Even if they didn't ask for it, to claim that the don't want it seems willfully ignorant.

I'd say more than half of my new customers already own them, and probably 1 in 5 customers mention desiring (or already using) one in our initial conversation before I have even mentioned sources. Rook works great as well, but (at least in Dallas) the overwhelming market share goes to AppleTV.

The 4th generation Apple TV supports the same IR signals as the previous generation Apple TV devices.

Late to the party.

I've done 3-4 of these and still am unsure of them.

I think the first one replaced an earlier version AppleTV, and the URC remote that was programmed for the earlier version worked normally for the new one.

The last two started from scratch, both using the Siri remote. Once I started using the Siri remote, it seemed to be paired to where I could not get the unit to accept IR. Or something else I could not explain.

I ended up going into settings, remote control, and "teaching" the AppleTV each command. Trouble is, once the menu and cursors are done, you want to do transport buttons. After learning one or two, it reports that I am reusing an earlier learned command and will not accept it.

Finally I set the URC remote to use transport commands from a random Denon cassette deck near the top of the list so I can get done.

Am I right that leaving the Siri Remote in the box is going to give success, but pairing it opens a can of worms?

I haven't done anything with a Gen4 ATV- did they remove the ability to pair a remote to it in the menu?

Maybe. The Siri remote is the only way I know to turn on CC. Don't use it much, but once in a while will to catch some hard to understand dialogue.

I used an old DirecTivo remote to teach commands since it has all of them and the codes are readily available in the URC database.

Pairing is nearly automatic but the new menu has no option to unpair.

Well, there's at least two more members here who aren't conversant with the Apple TV and its quirks. Presumably they, like I, am making money at this stuff.

And yet, the Harmony software shows an unpair button.

So, test it and tell us if it works. You have been around long enough to know that just because a command is there, doesn't mean the device will respond to it.

So I figured I'd get an answer to this question, which is sort of key.

After all the razzing you gave Ernie for not putting in Apple TVs, I was sure you would have a wealth of knowledge to share here. Do you guys make any money doing this? lolol

I have an issue with an 4th gen Apple TV. Unfortunately it is the first one I have tried to install as well. I've been doing Roku for the last year or so due to the 4k options, Apple must have missed that memo. This client has apple phones and lots of pics so airplay was the way to go.

I can't even get to the main menu. It seems stuck on a screen saver of San Fran or Cupertino or someplace. The apple is plugged directly to a Samsung 49KS8000. I tried to do the setup with customer phone and that was quirky at best. What's the deal with "Hold the phone close." I'm assuming that's for Bluetooth. To borrow from Ernie, close to the Apple, on top of it, close like in the same room or house? Plain stupid...

But I still have to fix it and make it work. I did charge the remote for a bit too, that didn't do anything either. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

Try holding down the Home and Menu button on the Siri remote until the AppleTV device starts flashing on the front LED. If that works goto settings/system/restart.

I hope some day you guys will realize that questions like this aren't just "borrow[ing] from Ernie." It's a bit sad when you don't stand on your own and say this or that instruction is stupid because it isn't clear. We installers have run across many more situations than the people who write the instructions, so more possible interpretations of undetailed instructions come to mind. Indeed, what EXACTLY does "Hold the phone close" mean? Any one of us should have wanted the instructions to say "Hold the phone close so ____________________ can take place."

Edit:
Here's a situation that any one of us should have called stupid:
I'm looking to see where to buy Rhinocort. I'm on the Rhinocort website. They have one product. There's a web page named "Where to buy." I see the empty box labeled "Zip code," so I put in a zip code. I hit Enter and get an error message.

See, I was also supposed to open the dropdown menu that I skipped over so I could select a product I was looking for. I open the dropdown. There's ONE CHOICE: Rhinocort.

If they only have one product, why the hell didn't they set up that page to default to that product?

Stupid.
