I am replacing two gang Russound control pads with one gang Control4 keypads in a half dozen locations. The Control4 keypads are Decora style.

In order to avoid having to do wall work to shrink the wall openings, I'm wondering if there is a solution that will let me mount the keypad in the middle of the opening and then use a faceplate that is two gang wide, but with a single gang Decora opening centered in the the middle.

Thoughts?

I looked for something like this last year and didn't find anything. You are looking for "2 gang 1 decora centered" plates like the one Daniel posted above. This will be your finish plate but you need something behind it to mount the decora device.

The metal plate Daniel posted could work as long as those center holes line up for a decora device. You would probably need to cut off the corners so that it fits without removing drywall. You would need to pilot 4 holes through it so you can secure it to the box with 4 screws.

Plastic or wood could also be used for the filler piece that you mount to the existing box and thread for your decora device to mount to.

Daniel's plate will work well. The mud ring will need to be trimmed and drilled to mount to an inwall box. Or you could knock the box out and put a single retrofit box in to mount too.

You could get creative and put something in the other spot. Maybe an occupancy/vacancy sensor that you can use to trigger events? Or if you need more buttons, put in a C4 2 button kp and use it just for volume. Otherwise, the other options shown here would work.... Or just be lazy and use a decora blank. :)

As I read crosen's first post, he doesn't want to rip open the wall and change the box cover, so Daniel's approach, though it will work, isn't ideal. buzz's idea looks like what he'd want to use: a cover plate that will go over a two-gang opening and to which a one-gang device can be installed. I've wanted such a plate in the past; recently I ran across a retail outlet that installed two-gang devices in three-gang boxes. They had found or made similar plates, that covered the box but had a centered two-gang opening and screw holes for the two-gang device.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'm sure he can.

I'm not sure he can remove a 4" box, or whatever 2 gang box or cover is in the wall, then replace it with a 1 gang box or anything else that is finished off with the single gang Decora plate he'll want to use. Again, buzz's cover plate is the answer.

Besides, if you COULD remove the box etc but buzz'z plate is available, why would you not simply use buzz'z plate?

Because Buzzzz'z metal back plate does not mount to an in wall standard box. It mounts to a 4 inch welded box with screws in the corner. Maybe that is in the wall, but very uncommon for inwall residential use. Mount one gang box in center with keypad then cover with the first plate shown that has only 2 holes.
The second plate option with 6 holes would work easily. But who would want 6 screws showing? Just my opinion
