With all the issues with HDMI and legacy systems or just HDMI in general why not just use SDI? You can get HDMI > SDI converters and SDI > HDMI converters for little money that support HDCP and resolutions up to 1080p 60hz over a single coax. Am I missing something here? Have never seen this discussed or even thought about it myself until I just happened across some of the adapters on Monoprice.

Yeah, you missed a lot. Like the fact that you still have HDMI on each end. But, being you are shopping on monoprice, I can see how you missed that.

Also keep in mind that the coverters/adaptors are typically powered devices that lock up or stop working.

Especially cheap/low quality ones like mono price.

Oh, another problem that you missed, manufacturers are pushing 4K panels like crazy. Customers want their new systems to be 4K capable.

I realize it is still HDMI and that 4k is the norm but I'm just thinking of many past situations before 4K and even current when a customer doesn't care about 4k. Also, I am no longer in the business. I would not be purchasing Monoprice gear for a professional installation.

I can almost understand how an end user might not care about 4k...

I would question the integrity anyone in the industry that would allow a client to install anything thats not 4k ready right now.

I would not install anything but 4K ready equipment at this point. I am just wondering why SDI was never a solution back when one of the biggest issues was upgrading legacy component video systems to digital.

One could debate the morality of installing 4K without explaining that manufacturers are already seriously talking about 8K shipping before 4K sources are even readily available. But, other than that, I agree with you

Hey, but at least there's one on each end, so your chances of lockup are doubled.

Back when one of the biggest issues was upgrading legacy bla bla bla, SDI to HDMI converters didn't exist or were highly priced. I remember talking with someone at a show, several years after HDMI became a thorn in our collective eyeballs, with him saying a one wire solution was coming soon. I think he was talking about SDI; the timing shows this was MUCH after HDMI became the problem it still is.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Uh, how long has SDI really been around as a working solution?

Actually, I think he was talking about a single cat solution. Originally, the first HDMI extenders required two cats to work. They also required very careful termination, you couldn't use EZ ends, and the wires had to be terminated on Monday's, Wednesday's or Saturday's for it to work at all.
