We've had Arris boxes in our market for a few years. More recently we have seen the DCX-3600. In our market the Power Save timer is broken. Even if it is disabled, the power still turns off eventually. On higher end systems, a video sensor connected to digital coax works. On lower end systems we set the Power On timer to turn the box on at 4 AM.

Light sensor on the optical, audio sensor, or video sensor. Are we really still talking about this?

Yes...We are...Because Time Warner, Comcast and others continue to remove and/or circumvent the means by which we reliably control their crappy boxes.

My husband still calls me in the middle of the night that the "TV is broken." He somehow manages to turn off the Dish box.

I don't think anyone's bemoaning "having to do this..." I, for one, am bemoaning the fact that I/we have to deal with service providers that are so utterly out-of-touch with the needs of their users and, often, the specifiers of their product.

I've repeatedly explained TWC's power control problem to TWC Supervisors, installers and at least one corporate agent for a DECADE. We integrators and control system manufacturers as a community have been bitching about it on forums and at trade shows for nearly TWENTY YEARS. And yet this functional deficiency not only hasn't been addressed BUT IS NOW EVEN WORSE. How the hell is that possible..?

Perhaps I'll just join some of you in surrendering the notion of building bullet-proof control systems...I'll just shrug when I hand my customer the controller for his $3000+ control system and dryly convey that all of the integration industry's muster and might cannot manage reliable control of his silly old cable box after 20 years of trying...Pathetic.

A. Video sensors work. B. I use HDMI sync sensing. However, I have had to write logic to turn the unit on and off to consistently get HDMI to work. I have also used the timer option but that is a bit of prayer. If you turn the unit on at 0430, what happens if a brown out occurs a 1330 and someone wants to turn on the display at 1800? A power button works, of course, but requires the end user to diagnose that the unit is powered off. If it's not in front of them that is a problem. Even if it is in front of them it is very hard to know if the unit is powered on or off, so subtle is the power led.
