Time Warner just delivered my client a new Arris DCX3600-M "Enhanced" DVR with 6 tuners.  [Use of an older vintage Cisco DVR with switched outlet is not possible because this takes my client "out of pricing promotion" and skyrockets his bill].  As with all late model TWC product, there is no functional switched outlet as with the older DVR's, so power state tracking is not possible.  I have reluctantly been using TWC's "workaround" for absence of discrete power codes via the "power/numeric" option in the Device menu along with flag state tracking and assumed I'd do the same here.  When I went to enable this option, however, I found it missing form the list ;-(.

Anyone encounter this new "feature" and come up with another way to reliably control these POS's besides the tried-and-true workarounds?

Progress...SMH

Is there a USB port that tracks the STB's power status?

I do not provide a Power button on any of my remotes and I make a point of telling the customer about this -- along with a warning that the babysitter or visiting Aunt Tilda will track down a Power button anyway. I tell them to leave the STB box ON at all times, but be aware that guests will probably find a way to turn OFF the STB.

This. Just screw cable cos. Put a Cable Power button on the remote. They change how their boxes work all the freaking time without notice.

I used to try and be creative using a S/PDIF output on the box to a video sensor or 0 or current sense.

Power Code = less headaches

They stay on regardless of whether or not the display says they are on anyway.

I've been doing this over 20 years now and not once have I had to roll a truck because someone couldn't figure out how to turn their box back on.

That being said, I'm sure it will happen tomorrow now.

Cisco STB's with Power Numeric are getting replaced with Arris. I'm resigned to the inevitable. We have considered:

Help button on remotes with short text box saying 'Turn on Cable Box' with Power button below

Turning off Power Save (which makes no sense anyway)

Programming the box to turn on every day at the same time.

TWC doesnt care about their own customers.. You really expect them to care about whether or not we can discretely turn their boxes on and off? lol

No...I've given up on that...I'm just venting.

BP's suggestion of the daily timer event is a good one though...That may avoid some power down issues after unavoidable firmware updates.

We put a "Fix" button on the cable TV page of the remote control.

The fix button includes the "input macro" for the cable box, with the addition of a cable box power command and a also a string of numbers. This seems to be a "catch all" for the cable box power being turned off.

We label the button "fix cable box" so it's in the customers' heads that the problem is generally the cable box.

The above is in addition to the standard practice of turning off power saving and adding a timer command to turn the box on to "last channel" each day at 6am.

My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

It's a cable box, leave it on. I haven't tracked power state of CB since you started, who cares???? Left on the only difference is a couple pennies a month to run the display. The PVR never shuts off anyway.

The Arris boxes we have don't even have a power button, they're on 24/7/365.

You must have much smarter clients than us. It was a common problem.

We always put a power button on our remotes and that has helped immensely.

The cable guys LOVE to replace boxes for any conceivable reason and the power saving feature is on by default.

FiOS is at least smart enough to provide a display when the box is off that tells you it's off and to press menu to turn it on. Brighthouse...big, stupid black screen!

USB is always on.

I just use if/then with flags or variables and then a "sync cable box" labeled power button some where on the first page for when the box is accidentally manually switched on or off.
One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.

Light sensor on the optical, audio sensor, or video sensor. Are we really still talking about this?
