Mostly curious but I know I am going to get asked soon enough. Other than the custom options, does anyone, including Sony, make a sound bar that is nearly as wide as the TV? Not sure the exact width....but I know the 75" is 65" wide....even one that wide would be better than the puny offerings available.

If someone can afford an 85" Sony 4K they can afford to have a sound bar made!

It's custom, but Leon will build a OTO powered soundbar up to 120" wide.

I looked up MSRP for what you'd need:

Soundbar: $2,895
Upcharge to 85": $295
Custom Grill if there's a bump on the bottom of the TV: $75 (cost)
TV mount Bracket: $395

Total Retail: $3660

Only a manufacturer who is trying to go out of business would make a sound bar wider than almost every TV on the market. I mean, who would buy it?

A TV that large is basically a sail. Comparatively speaking, a sound bar is an anchor. You haven't said whether you're going to mount the bar to the wall or to the TV... but I had a Triad bar custom cut to match a Sony 65" and it was quite a challenge to mount to the TV.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The back story....there always is one in a thread like this...is that we have an 85" in the shop now being prepped for install. We are breaking all the rules on this one. :)

Basically a stubborn customer had a budget.....but blew it all on the biggest TV he could fit in that budget....and voila....we have an 85" going in with no budget left for a $3000 custom soundbar.

Not only this, but we are putting this thing on an articulating bracket. Yikes, right? After handling the TV, it should be fine. It will require 2 people to maneuver but it is what it is. Chances are it will be put into a good spot and left there. It is in a corner of a room between a fireplace and a wall of windows. I have not seen the seating arrangement yet, but surely it will be a far from ideal viewing situation. :)

For speakers, we are using 3 Klipsch G series flat panel speakers. My task yesterday was mounting the 3 speakers onto the TV/mount in such a way that would be solid, and look as decent as possible (my requirement, not the customer's).

I ended up using a single length of unistrut slightly wider than the TV, bolted to the mounting rails of the ART2XL from SnapAV. I used 12" lengths of unistrut bolted to the longer piece, at each end of the TV to support it against the back of the TV to keep the flex to a minimum. Then, I used a single screw and lock washers to attach the speakers at each end. All in, it is as solid as anything else. A "standard" center channel mount will be used for the center below the TV.

My guess is that with the time involved in engineering this solution, the cost will be creeping in on the cost of a custom length soundbar, which would not only look better, but would likely be less of a challenge to mount. :)

I see Sonance makes a sliding adjustable one that goes out to 77.xx", which is wider than the 85" Sony by a couple of inches. MSRP $2000. Anyone know how it sounds?

It's nice to know that you're adding something to strengthen the TV laterally. I learned a new word for use with big flatscreens. It's a verb: taco.

"Don't pull too hard on the sides of that 4000" inch TV. We don't want to taco it, you know."

Yeah I was worried too. But after unboxing it and handling it, I do not think it will get "tacoed" by these folks. Now, I might be worried putting it on a tilt mount above a fireplace.....too much tilt, with the way they built the TV, might be asking for some mexican food of some type....chalupa maybe?

The fact that a single person cannot grab both sides of the TV and pull is comforting. Requiring 2 persons to move the TV will do 2 things. 1. It will make it safer and less likely to damage the TV. and 2. It will almost certainly make sure the TV never gets moved. :)

I still do not know why Sony did not just build the TV one thickness. It would certainly make the set less taco prone if it was the same thickness on the top half as it is on the bottom half.

Thing is a beast for sure.

The Sonance adjustable width soundbar has been good for us in this instance.

For as horrible of a POS sounding crap they are, I don't think their price is reasonable at all. I think they should give their crap away free (I still wouldn't take it).

I have only been in front of the Sonance adjustable once, but I thought it sounded really good for what it is...I think it was a Marantz AVR powering.

Try using Artisan speakers mounted on the sides of the TV. Much better looking and sounding.
