I'm looking for a decent pair of outdoor speakers. I don't have to have the best but I want to avoid the junk. My taste in sound lean towards the bright side. Music is usually jazz but my soon to be teenagers may have different tastes. : - ) My budget is $200 per pair or less. Reliability is also high on my priority list. The speakers will be tucked into an alcove. They will be separated about 8'. The side walls are 2' - 3' deep. It's open above the speakers. I'm in Denver CO. Our environment can be max 90 - 100 degrees in the summer but low humdity. An occassional heavy thunderstorm. Maybe some hail. Winter we can get below zero with several feet of snow. In the summer, there will be an awning over the speakers. In the winter, they'll be totally exposed. The brands I've found are:
Sonance
B&W
Cambridge
Niles
Near (I think I've read about this brand)
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Your budget may be an issue. Take a look at the Niles OS series speakers. We install the OS6 whenever a job calls for a box speaker mounted outside. We have many of them located directly on the ocean down here on the east coast of Florida and have never had to replace one.

PennyG My top canidate has been the Niles speakers. Do you know where I can find prices for them? I didn't see that on www.nilesaudio.com. Even MSRP would be useful.

Brand new models just came out. OS6.5 at $449.95 suggested retail.
OS6.3 at $399.95 suggested retail. These are due to ship in January. They come in black or white and include the mounting bracket.

Jamo, Sonance, Speakercraft, Niles and even Rockustics has new "Eaves" speakers.

Jamo A330 for $199.95, Jamo IN/OUT1 for $199.95, Niles OS3 for $229.95, Infinity Outrigger JR for $199.95, Pok Atrium55 for $299.95, Bost Voyager $299.95, and I could go on all day.....Many good speakers for background music outside.

I've installed lots and lots of Energy Tempest speakers. I put them up against my bookshelf speakers in the store before settling on them as my choice. They include a switch for equalization for indoor or outdoor applications. $300/pair is a good value.

in terms of being weatherproof the sonance are by far the best. 99% of my installs are within 500' of the ocean. i've seen boston vayagers die in less than 2 years as have niles. unfortunately blose seem to survive too.

Also to note...the Sonance carry a lifetime warranty. Mariner Jr. 20's on my patio, and I luv em.

Nears are excellent. Used them for 7 - 8 years. very few probs.

Infinty Ourtriggers come in 2 sizes and have a great sound for the price.
