In my haste to get a musician client a BD player that would support all sorts of good disc formats, I did not notice that it doesn't play Netflix or stream anything else. Well, duh.

What's the hot setup for a guy with a Netflix account? FWIW he's going to have a PS4 connected to the system, and the system will be controlled by a URC MX990 and MRF350.

Thanks for any ideas you can share.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Seems like damn near any cheapo Sony BluRay would work.

Add a Roku 4. Call it a day.

It works
Has direct select for Netflix.
Allows search, select and add to watch list for Netflix
Supports profiles for Netflix

And it does 4K

I have many musician clients that request to play as many formats as possible including SACD. Balanced outputs included to feed any studio gear they might have for transfers what more could you ask for?

The Oppo piece is indeed great, but beyond a price the client would have accepted. It's a curious thing -- get us the best, followed by "isn't that a high price"?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I've got the audio part covered as much as possible, but need a video streaming device so I won't have to use the smart TV features of the TV, along with the inevitable accursed ARC.

Tell them to define 'best' without omitting the cost.

AppleTV and Roku both work well- do you want to avoid little boxes? If so, use a different BD player and be done with it.

Roku or Apple TV.

Gotta know, what Bluray player these days doesn't have streaming stuff built in to it? Thought it was unavoidable.

I question if he truly is a musician. Because most musician clients I've had, are use to the high cost of quality and features they want.
Maybe wanna-be musician?

Anyway... On the Bluray player, there are only a handful that will play 'ALL' formats out there (CD, HDCD, DVD-A, SACD, etc...).
Oppo is the most popular and best IMO.
Denon has some but same price or even more expensive.
Sony has that new Universal player for around $350 (that has streaming services built-in as well). That might have been a good choice.

Separate streaming box:
Roku or AppleTV. The choice would come down to his preference but note; a lot of musicians are in the Apple ecosphere at work. So an AppleTV is usually the choice they like.

I always recommend Roku as the streaming device, with the exception of folks that are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem (note, more than just an iPhone or iPad). I think Roku is a more pleasant experience with a better layout. That of course is personal preference. Both ATV and Roku work better than any BDP or TV I have used for streaming. Roku is very cheap to get into. The newer Roku sticks are pretty fast, but I always stick to the Roku 3 or 4 in the event we do not stick with IP control. Don't go with a Roku 2, it is cheaper but the interface is very slow.

Also, if you need to feed separately to an audio system (non HDMI receiver), then the Roku 4 would be a better choice, it has an optical output whereas the Roku 3 has HDMI out only.

Couldn't agree more. BTW, I have to reset APTV's about 10 to 1 compared to Ruko's. I think APTV's are the only device on earth that likes wifi over hardline.
how in the hell does ernie make money?

I've had the same problem, only they required restores which means taking it out of the cabinet and connecting to clients computer /itunes account. Roku has been solid.

Apple TV has the best Netflix interface in my opinion. Love Roku also, but avoid the USB stick and go for the box player, much faster.

The newest stick is actually fast. I prefer Roku's Netflix interface to ATV, but again, that is just personal preference.

Is the Roku product available through distribution? I've looked and don't see it.

This has been helpful. There are links to pdfs listing features versus products for both dedicated streaming devices and streaming BD players. The caution is that the dedicated device list doesn't list the Roku 4, so we have to assume the list is not completely up to date.

At Fred's favorite supplier.

Or you can just go on Amazon, or Ebay, and pay less.

Sorry Fred.
