We go on site today to install in ceiling speakers. The interior decorated just now decided to use stainless steel trim rings for all of the lighting. The job Spec'd for 8' and 4" In ceiling episode speakers. The thin line series still has a white plastic edge on them.

Custom Paint them?
Another Speaker?

Help!!!!

I'd toss that one back to the interior decorator to figger out... don't let one of those idiots make it your problem.
I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's AV trouble, a man alone.

It's nearly impossible to get a speaker grill painted to match metallic light can trims. Light cans look nice in pretty metal colors, speakers? Not so much.

We would usually just spray the speaker the same color as the ceiling. It's a standard service we offer at normal labor rates.

Otherwise we would offer to spray a color of the customer/designer's choice...

The Nice part about Episode speakers is that you can order more covers as needed.

I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

Tell client and ID that grills are paintable and let them have at it.

The decorator is a moron if she wants stainless steel speakers in the ceiling. Cut out some aluminum foil discs the size of the speakers and tape them to the ceiling to show her how bad it will look. 8" shiny plates on the ceiling will look like shit.

8" pie tins from wallmart. Go home and have a beer.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

you could probably get close by sanding/sand blasting and a clear coat to inhibit rust. paint the white part silver?

contact leon, james, triad and ask them to make custom grilles.

the biggest issue is that stainless is not magnetic!!!!!
I love supporting product that supports me!

Magnetic or not depends on the alloy.

Which brings up another point. The exact color tone of the "stainless" depends on the underlying alloy and how it is finished. For example, is the surface "brushed" and if so, how fine is this "brush"? Depending on the proximity of other "stainless" fixtures and the lighting, this may not be overly important, but this should all be considered and specified by the designer.

I think that "magnetic" or not is the least of your worries. In the end small magnetic pads or strips could be attached to the back of the grill if necessary.

I would put it back on the interior detractor. No such product is available and ask her if client is willing to foot bill for starting up a company to make them. Just make her day hell.

Lights can be a focal point in a room. So having those stainless steel I can understand. But speakers should be hidden. Thus blending them into the decor so they won't be noticed, is the way to go. Especially when they are in ceiling.

Those stainless steel, or chrome recessed lights were really popular.

They won't match unless it's the exact same stainless finished the exact same way. Since the lighting manufacturer is the only one that knows exactly how their trim was done you will not be able to do an exact match.

Chances that you will hear "But they don't match" is almost 100%. And then it's your problem to resolve.
