I was wondering why our order hasn't arrived. Glad we paid with a CC - we might have some recourse.
If the hardware shows up I'm sending it back.

The most telling statement in the whole article is Srinivasan saying "I never planned for this". How short sighted could he be? He fought multiple legal cases for ten years, saw Hollywood and top tech companies like Apple pushing technology that make in home servers obsolete, and he never thought about running out of cash or looking for another product.

Such a shame.
Sadly it seems this is true. Very saddened by this. I was ready to order a Strato and start using their shop for 4k UHD. With the shop and the strato I think they were finally onto something at the right price.
In my opinion they have made a few mistakes but in their defense they always tried to take the legal road and they made an excellent product. Actually one of the greatest products available in our industry.
Let's hope somebody buys them and continues the good work.

I don't see anybody buying them. Hollywood won't play with them as they are too small. If they were purchased it would be to get some IP or technology, the brand would disappear.
Hollywood won't care about the tiny high end boutique industry.
I would love to be proven wrong as Kscape is a superior product.

To be fair, it's not necessarily valid to argue that they should have seen it coming because of the growth of streaming services. I mean, there have been devices that make fancy wind up watches obsolete for 50 years, but there are still companies that do a good business selling fancy wind up analog watches. At the price point they were at, they weren't selling to folks who were particularly budget conscious.
Some of it could be an issue of market saturation, in that there are only so many wealthy folks out there who are into movies, and they finally had enough of them that there wasn't a lot of growth available to them there.
And it sounds like they did put a lot of effort into supporting a high quality streaming service.

I'm surprised this didn't happen when the market crashed as I never saw this product line as a 'client need.'
In my experience, the customers with $$ for this product just want to view the show/movie once and move on.
On demand and streaming made this obsolete.

SONOS, please buy this. Make it happen. Sonos won't buy them unless they can figure out how to make a product that can sell in Target.

I have to disagree with you on a couple of points. On August 20, 2016 at 13:38, Dean Roddey said...
I mean, there have been devices that make fancy wind up watches obsolete for 50 years, but there are still companies that do a good business selling fancy wind up analog watches. Yes, but along the way, the technology that makes watch-winding possible did not become obsolete or even forbidden (1080p on component, for instance). Some of it could be an issue of market saturation, in that there are only so many wealthy folks out there who are into movies, and they finally had enough of them that there wasn't a lot of growth available to them there. When, in 1970, I told my girlfriend that I was starting work in a hi-fi shop, she said, "how can you guys stay in business? Doesn't everybody already have a record player?" She didn't have one and had never gone into a record store before she met me, but still....

Pretty much. Saw this coming for years, not sure why they didn't. Probably the same reason people collected beanie babies. At the time Kaleidscape was introduced, people liked owning DVDs, purchased storage racks to showcase the collection, and shopped at Musicland, Blockbuster and Sam Goodie.
