Why would email that shows up on webmail not appear in Gmail until a half hour or an hour later?

My Gmail has always been this way. If there is something important that I am waiting for, I have to go to webmail to retrieve it, because it will not show up till later otherwise. My email is coming to me via EarthLink.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

How is gmail and earthlink setup?

If you are forwarding from earthlink, does it do it as email comes in or ever X timeunits?

Mail sent from gmail is always instant and mail from hotmail/yahoo etc is always instant to and from gmail. I think the issue is usually with your "webmail" not forwarding the mail quickly.

I experience this with my "domain email" that i have setup in gmail. So "[email protected]" for example. If you send mail there its available instantly if i login to a webmail access point like my hosting accounts cPanel (where i can use squirrel mail etc to view mail)...but it takes forever to show up at gmail.

If you added your Earthlink account to Gmail, then it's perfectly normal.
POP accounts are polled about every half hour, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on google's history of finding mail in the POP account.

From inside gmail, you can hit settings, accounts, and "check mail now" for that account if you want it to poll right away. But you don't have an option to increase the polling frequency of non-gmail accounts via POP.

I don't use gmail accounts, but I find that service to gmail accounts is variable. The email servers associated with our host account are very prompt. Latency is a second or two to turn an email around, to or from. If I send to a friend's gmail account, the messages are usually prompt, but they can sit somewhere for a few minutes. Messages from a gmail account are usually prompt.
