Interesting, I just came here for a similar question to another thread but didn't want to hijack it.
In my case there are quite a few homes with Cat5 at the TV location and no way to run a cable.
I could sell the owners an extender for every device (3 or 4) and be done with it but I think I am much better off going with a single extender and a video switch or A/V receiver. (no speakers in these homes)
What are your suggestions?

I believe Yamaha to be the cheapest A/V receiver for an application like this but do they allow HDMI audio pass through or do you recommend another solution?

Binary 3x1 or 5x1. Work well and less to worry about going wrong.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Although, it likely will cost more than an AVR, it has a lot more stuff in it.....especially useful if you only have a single CAT5e at the TV.

Actually, the cheap AVR could well last just as long.

Just as long as it's not an Onkyo.....

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

A simple HDMI switch and a logitech harmony with the IR codes learned will do the trick. Simple and cheap solution to control the av sources over distance

He might not. If he didn't have an initial problem, then they will probably stay working as is.
But the possibility of future installs having issues if he continues to use them (or changing something in the old installs), is good that he will run into problems eventually.
Unless he's like Tuck and Snap seems to ship all the good ones to him. Head scratcher there ?

Maybe if they've changed things. I've been using them for a few years now without any issues. One of the only pieces with an HDMI port on it I don't want to chuck into the Sun.
