Xfinity X1 DVR and add on boxes with standard remotes.

The customer wanted the xfinity boxs located in a remote location and not at the TVs. Cat6 with HDMI extenders is run between the boxes and the TVs.
The TVs close to the rack will change channels with no problems. The other TVs are too far away for the RF to work.

Tested the remote on an RTI capture box and found the channel buttons are RF only.

Is there a way to have the channel button output IR or what have others done to extend the remote.

If the xfinity remote is set to RF, you can change it to IR by pressing the setup button until the lights flash, then enter in 987. The box will accept RF commands from the xfinity remote and IR codes from another remote at the same time
why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!

They need a universal remote w/RF base. You mentioned RTI, pretty sure they have a good code set for the Xfinity, in the newest IR Megalist.

Depending on the distance however, the simple RTI ProControl remotes might not work well. Several people have indicated the range on that RF base station was not that good.

Just how far away are these other rooms?

Will this make the remote output IR on the channel button?

The rooms are at the most 50' with 2-3 walls between.

The X1 remote will either be all IR or all RF, not a mixture of both

o.O

you cant fit this behind the TV?

Oh, and the channel Buttons are absolutely NOT "RF Only"

IR is flakey at best, but there is an IR receiver and most major Remote manufacturers have IR codes that work with X1.

If 987 is the code for IR, what is the code for RF? In case I need to back out of this.

Thank you very much for your help on this.

Press and hold setup until led changs colors, press xfinity button. Should see a code and pair it for RF.

It sounded like 987 was not the number of a codeset, but a number that would switch the remote from RF to IR. If that's the case, it should not change the codeset.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Thanks for the help. Did the 987 code and the remote started spitting out the channel IR. I tried the AV Pro HDMI extenders for the first time and they work very well. Just wish they made a box to mount all of the transmitters in. No problems sending and receiving the IR and HDMI looks great with no connection issues.

It would have been easier to put the small comcast boxes behind the TV if preplanning had been a luxury, but this job was one of those " the drywall is going up tomorrow and I want a TV distribution system, but I don't know which provider I am using." In retrospect I should have run a RG6 with the Cat6. I thought I could use Cat 6 and Muxlab baluns if needed instead of RG6. The baluns didn't work, in fact a 10' cat 5 produced a very noisy picture. Mux labs tech help was never there and would not call back.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi there,
I have an Xfinity xr15 remote. I have programmed it such that the IR codes control my Denon receiver for volume in my 5.1 setup, which is working fine. However when I use the channel change or DVR functions of the Xfinity XR15 remote, they are RF and if I get too far away they stop working. So I'm wondering if your recommendation to have the Xfinity remote be infrared only would allow the xr15 to put out infrared codes for channel change and all the other Xfinity box commands? I have an infrared to RF transmitter/receiver repair to control the Denon volume, which is in another room in a rack and that's working great. I just want all the commands coming out of the Xfinity remote to be infrared and I'll be good to go.

You should be good to go. 987 "unpairs" the remote from the cable box. It then acts like any other IR remote.

And yes, it's radio frequency range is not enough if you have the cable box down the hall in a closet or on another floor of the house. It has to be reasonably close to the room you are in with the remote.
