You thought you knew what you wanted, but we, being technology experts, and smarter, gave you what you really need.

And will all of these products continue to work for as long as the 850s have done? If not, then you haven't given me what I asked for and you sure haven't given me what I need.

Control4.

One remote that fits all projects.

Don't want one remote that fits all projects. Want one as capable as the MX850 but without its flaws. If that happens to be the C4, then why the big sales pitch on details irrelevant to the request?

Multiroom project, bigger processor, but same remote.

I would not expect to use the same remote, nor force upon my clients who only need to control ONE SYSTEM a remote that is spiffy enough to do a lot more.

Not true.

If you're doing multiple processors,

WE ARE NOT. THAT EFFECTIVELY ENDS YOUR RESPONSE.

Read Post 29. Thanks for playing, but you're not playing the same game.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

For the guys that sell them, why the 990 over the 890? I replaced my 980 with an 890 and feel like it was an upgrade.

What does the 990 give you over the 890 other than 2 more soft keys, but losing the 4 colors and a REC button?

I think the answer is simply time. The 990 is brand new. I know personally, I like to give it a little time before I start offering it, so for now, the 890. I have not handled a 990 yet, so cannot speak to it's ergonomics. I was never high on the 980, due to it being a bit big, especially for the ladies. It just didn't fit in their hand comfortably. The 890 fixed that and it just seemed to work better in that respect. Not sure if the 990 is closer to the 980 footprint, the 890, or something in between. Perhaps someone else can answer that.

The MX-990 is wider and a little longer than the MX-890, but not as thick. I personally think the button tactile response is better on the 990, too (more definite, and more consistent across the entire keypad).

MX-890 is obviously a good remote, but for $50 more MSRP you get a bigger and more impressive screen, 2 more hard buttons (remember it has the REC and color keys now), and a more premium look and feel. And a more vertical dock, if that's useful.

Funny. You want us to tell you how long a new product will last?

I would not expect to use the same remote, nor force upon my clients who only need to control ONE SYSTEM a remote that is spiffy enough to do a lot more.

Very honorable. So with that as your guiding light, what do you supply to a customer that just needs a 5.1 receiver with maybe Dolby Digital and all channel stereo for surround modes? Just about every receiver on the planet has between one and several dozen surround modes. They also have way more HDMI inputs that you need. They may have 7.1 channels. So what are you using, in order that you do not violate your guiding light?

I know you will come up with something to defend yourself, but you've been given some pretty good recommendations. Pick one and run with it.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

But you don't lose the 4 colored buttons and REC button with the MX-990, as the MX-990 has these buttons. The MX-990 has the same buttons as the MX-890, with the biggest difference being that it adds two more soft keys to the LCD screen.

I doubt this will be the case. The tech world is much riskier now. Marginally profitable lines are suddenly dumped by the MBA's and companies crash or are bought and sold to new investors who change focus. A recent example of this is with the Sonos drivers from Extra Vegetables.

If you want to present an absolutely custom and consistent user interface, go with one of the fringe companies based on pad/phone. In this case you are assuming the technology risk for your customers. If one of these fringe companies goes under, you can switch to another company, retool your underlying code, and keep the same interface for your customers.

At this point the only "constant" is constant change. If this is not acceptable, one needs to change one's occupation to "watching flowers grow" and hope that global warming will not have much impact in the short term.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the MX-990. Looks almost identical to the MX-980 in photos, but it's a lot thinner, lighter, and better feeling. Finally has the color buttons, too.

I agree. I purchased my first one back in March. This is now my goto remote.

My point with the "will it last" thing was to try to limit the recommendations to products that feel solid, with properties that we have, by experience, learned go along with products likely to last. Of course nobody can tell how long products will last.

I'm following the recommendations here and going with the MX990. I think and hope this has been a good experiment for all of us, to get this different info together in one place. I sure as hell could not find this kind of recommendation and commentary on the URC site. There, every item is THE BEST!
