I've seen several threads recommending and warning about BD players, but I sure can't find 'em! Can somebody update me?

Thanks.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have used Sony for many, many years. They have always been solid for me. I have tried every other brand to test once in awhile but I am never compelled to want to move away from the Sony players for the price & features.

For higher-end, you just can't beat the Oppo. Unfortunately, there is not that much markup on the product - and that's if you are lucky enough to be a dealer (I got cut awhile back because I couldn't do the volume they wanted).

Honestly however, who 'really' uses the disc player part of a bluray player these days? I know I do but I also know I'm the rare exception.
Most people only use their bluray players to stream. And because of that, they would be much better served by a streaming device: Roku, AppleTV, FireTV, etc...
Even for those that do still use the disc player part, a separate streaming box is still a good idea.

I agree about the separate streaming box. TV and BDP's are just not great streamers (although I think BDP's do handle it better than TVs, which always seem to lockup or have other issues. To your point about Oppo margin, how much margin are you making on a Sony BDP? I know its no more than on an Oppo, just the total dollar of the sale skews it to where you think you should be making more.

My client specifically asked for an Arcam. It was solid and had it all industry wise. I didn't pay much attention because I wasn't fond of the room's sound, but he thought it sounded worlds better than the Oppo at least on CD playback.

Same answer for the last several years: Oppo.

I more or less insist on having one on every matrix, because I am 100% convinced that the first time a customer tries to watch a DVD after telling me they didn't need a DVD player (that's what they call blu-ray players) their selective memory will kick in and I will hear, "Who sells a system without a DVD player! I paid HOW MUCH for all of this crap!"

That said... Sony and Oppo. Both respond well to control, which is all we ask.

Just tell the client you're adding x to the price of an Oppo to cover handling.

The client that wants a better player, understands you need to make money and values your service. Everyone else, a Sony.

Were they hooked up the exact same way?
After the customer puts the bong down, have him recheck all his settings on the machines and do an A/B comparison. There's no way he's going to hear a difference between 2 players, that are hooked up the exact same way, that both are known for perfect reproduction.

'If' he has them hooked up with analog connections and was listening thru a set of high-end headphones (or dedicated room that was tuned), you 'might' could tell a slight difference because of the DACs used. But Oppo has the 105 model (using ESS DACs) that still costs way less than the Arcam.
Plus, the Arcam calls itself a universal player but doesn't even play DVD-A discs. LOL.

That last comment, about DVD-A discs, hit a nerve with me. I don't know the client, but he's in the music industry and he just might bring some unusual kind of disc home from the studio... Do Sony and Oppo players play everything? (I'm not worried about discs from other regions.)

Most all of your cheap BD players will not! Sony and a few others will play SACDs but that's about it.

If you want a player that will play CD, DVD, Bluray, SACD, DVD-A, stream .flac files and other oddities; then it is best to go with the higher-end units that support all that.
Note: Most of the higher-end units don't offer near as many video services however.
Again, good reason to have a separate streaming box and disc player. Especially on a high-end setup.

We did a BDT-101CI and probably won't sell another, you lose the multi channel out, streaming, ir jack on rear, 2nd hdmi, aux inputs.

It was a nice player but once you get used to the 103's and 105's the 101 seems like a much lesser unit, for 100.00 more the 103 has so much more.
There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

Not true 4K but the best unit on the market. Solid build, great sound and a bargain considering the quality.

Hmm. Hope Sony updates that with 4K BD support. Instant sale for me.
