I know there has been discussions on here before in regards to controlling these newer openers that have the myQ link on them. A lot of you have modified wireless remotes or hard wired and soldered onto the button contacts for the hardwired controller to integrate these openers into your automation system, and none of this extra time and material is required.

I can confirm from personally testing on my own opener that all you require is a contact closure in parallel to the wall controller (red and white terminals). This is also stated in the manual on how to test the door operation if you think the wall controller is defective.

What do you mean by setting? I have personally connected two wires directly onto the motor, touched them together and watched the door open and close. As per the manual ([Link: liftmaster.com]) page 30 (beginning of troubleshooting) 3 Flashes, it states that you can manually short out the wires to test the door operation if you are thinking the hardwired controller is not working.

I have a house with 4 of these units and can confirm they DO work just like SWO said.

I believe it depends on what wall controller you are using. If you have the "smart" ones with the LCD display, clock, temp. readout, etc. it enables the additional security that keeps a contact closure from opening the door. If you use the basic or standard wall controls, it will continue to work with contact closure. We discovered this on a job that had 4 openers in 2 separate garages. For whatever reason, one garage got the fancy wall controls and the other got basic ones. We were able to control the one with the basic controls with a contact closure. The other, we had to get additional controls and solder wires to the button contacts.

YMMV as with anything else. I believe we called tech support for liftmaster and got the above info, as it is not spelled out clearly or at all in the manual for the openers.

Are these units installed within the last 4 months? Because if not the new generation MYQ BS cannot be controlled with a simple contact closure confirmed by lift master TS. Spent half a day and two ruined controllers before giving up and using the MYQ gateway and availible C4 driver

Yes, I replaced a broken 8300 with the new 8500 in February/March and tested tonight (May 25,2016) and worked without issue

Check your state/local laws as you may be liable if there is no camera or other way of visibly monitoring the door. Lutron, URC and others have warned about this...

UL 325 added 3 requirements, in 2009, for remote operation.

The feature must be utilized only on an operator equipped with a secondary entrapment protection system such as a photoelectric sensor.

The feature must be activated only when the operator is installed on a sectional door.

The operator must be equipped with an audible and visual warning system indicating a pending motion for 5 seconds before the door starts moving.

With the 8500 series they have both the photoelectric sensors as well as a force switch that must be installed and working. The force switch must be set and tested by the garage door installer. If you want to confirm the force switch is set properly, throw a 2x4 or similar device that will not block the sensors under the door (when open) and close the door. If the door returns to the open position then the force switch is installed and working properly, if the motor keeps trying to push down then call the door installer and tell him to come set the force switch.

The feature must be activated only when the operator is installed on a sectional door.

The only non-sectional doors I have seen are on huge agricultural drive sheds where they either install sliding doors or large hanger style doors that open out and up.

The operator must be equipped with an audible and visual warning system indicating a pending motion for 5 seconds before the door starts moving.

Install a small security siren and a 12v light connected to a relay on your automation system. When Garage Door button pressed close relay 1 for 5 seconds (triggers siren and light) after 5 seconds trigger relay 2 to control door. You are at maybe $20 for parts and maybe 1hour labour to install and test.
