So I have a new Apple TV in a customer's house and it's working with the original Apple IR codes but not exactly the same as the new touchpad remote.

Basically the biggest problem is that the ZDF app (German TV) doesn't allow scrolling with the IR codes. It only seems to work with the touchpad. I was able to somehow get left to skip 10seconds back by holding multiple buttons and fiddling around but then I lost it can't get it back. So there's definitely some buttons combos or holds that allow more advanced control but for the life of me I can't determine the specifics.

It's not just you, the new Apple TV is so finike with integration. I now tell my clients that if you have an new generation Apple TV I cannot guarantee it can be used with our automation platform. Which really sucks if the equipment is remotely located, in which case they get a Roku until someone fixes this either on apples side or control side.

If you are using a programable remote I had great luck with teaching it both the basic (L,R,U,D, Select|Play|Pause) and the extended commands (FF,Rew, Skip Back, Skip Forward, Play & Pause) using an old TiVo remote. I loaded these commands into my MX-890 and it has worked great.

I have had no issues with the new appletv.  i use Oppo bluray codes programmed into my URC files and teach those codes just fine.

I don't have issues with the L,R,U,D,Select/Play/Pause. Well at least not for most apps. Netflix works as expected. It's this ZDF app that is weird. It's like fast forward and reverse only work with the touchpad.

Oh well I guess it's just one more electronics manufacturer who doesn't care less about integration. Well unless it's their proprietary integration.

Just noticed this:

are there unique FF, REW, Skip Back, Skip Forward, Play and Pause commands? Maybe those unique codes are being used by ZDF?

Yes. I was surprised at this when it asked if I wanted to learn the advanced commands. But when you learn them, the Play button only will Play, Pause will only Pause. Skips jump forward or back 10 seconds. Makes my ATV work just like my DirecTV page which is great because I missed the Skip Back function.

Ironically, the ATV will not let you learn commands from an ATV remote. So you can't use the ATV commands for L, R, U, D etc and another remote for the advanced commands. All or nothing.

If ZDF is a free app I would be willing to try it.

it will respond to apple tv codes even if you teach a different set of codes, that is why they don't let you teach the appletv codes.

The old TiVo remote has today's Apple TV codes in it? How do you get them to come out? Or are you saying the Apple TV uses old TiVo codes?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The Apple TV will learn the old TiVo, or any other remote for that matter, commands. In the Settings there is a place to Program Remote. You basically tell the ATV that you want it to learn other remote codes and it takes you through the steps for it to learn the 3rd party remotes commands. There is a basic set and I think it calls it advanced or extended commands. It takes you through step by step to learn these commands.

Then I just programmed those commands into my MX-890.

Right. Beyond what comes on the stock tiny Apple remote, there's support in the ATV for additional functions, but *no* codes to go with them. Instead, you tell the ATV what codes you want to go with those functions (or even reprogram the original functions). Kind of an odd system, but I guess they designed so any remote will work. Still, I don't see why there couldn't be "official" code versions as well.

Agree. Not everyone has old remotes laying around that they can use the codes from.

Indeed. I tried my Nevo with a code set from any CD-type unit on IR and the Apple TV4 would not see it. I then tried a Windows Media Center remote which was Philips manufactured labeled RC6 on the back, didn't see that either. Finally I found a old Sony CD remote, APT4 saw it and worked perfectly then I learned into my Nevo and all is good! Thanks for the help!

Additionally, you can teach the new AppleTV 4 existing codes, if you like. So, if you have an old remote or control system, just teach the new ATV4 whatever codes you want and it will work.
